Car repair Opel Astra J

If you want your car to serve you for a long time, you need a competent car service. Our technical center offers a wide range of Opel repair and maintenance services. Our masters know thoroughly the structure of these cars, which allows them to quickly find and eliminate the cause of the breakdown. Our car services provide services for minor, current and capital repairs of cars of this brand.

When and why may it be necessary to replace the Opel Astra J parking brake cable?

It should be immediately clarified that the Opel Astra J is equipped with two brake systems that are independent of each other:

  1. Main hydraulic;
  2. Parking cable

The parking brake system has a cable drive for the rear wheel brakes. By order for this car an electric parking brake can be installed.

In what cases is it required to replace the parking brake cable on the Opel Astra J?

  • The parking brake does not hold the car on an incline of 25% when the lever in the passenger compartment is moved by 7-9 teeth (clicks) of the ratchet device;
  • Lack of fixation of the handbrake when lifting it;
  • When removing it from the parking brake, it takes a lot of effort to lift it up and press the button.

Most likely, for all of the above signs of a breakdown of the parking brake system, the cause of the malfunction is as follows: it may be a break in the parking brake cable, due to normal wear and tear or extreme loads. In this case, the only correct solution is to change this element of the technical means.

On Opel Astra J cars, the replacement of the parking brake cable is not difficult and well-debugged by our masters, and it is better to entrust its implementation to the experienced professionals of our car service. Employees will select the required cable specification and order it from a trusted manufacturer. It is quite difficult to do it on your own, since for some car models these parts are a real shortage.

IMPORTANT! It is a big misconception that if you use the hand brake a little, it will preserve the integrity of the cable. The opposite tendency is observed: the elements lose their mobility in the shells if they are inactive, and therefore can often jam and break off, especially if there was a sharp jerk.

In the event of a malfunction in the electro-mechanical parking brake, a text message is shown in the driver information center display. You can try turning the element off and then on. If the problem persists, contact our car service, our consultants will promptly assist you. It is likely that the reason for the indicator light up is a broken cable.

If your car requires replacement of this part, be sure to contact the service. Firstly, this procedure requires two people, it will be very difficult for one to cope. It is necessary to strictly follow the sequence of operations, starting with dismantling the wheel brake drum and ending with pulling the cable out of the bracket slots. The need to change this element of the parking brake is a common problem, but in our car service, repairs are carried out as soon as possible. Our masters know perfectly well the design of the Opel Astra parking brake system and are ready to do the job with high quality.

Our employees are always ready to advise you on the repair of the Opel Astra parking brake cable and register for diagnostics at a convenient time.

If there are scoring, deep marks and other defects on the working surface of the disc that increase the wear of the pads and reduce the braking efficiency, as well as in the case of increased lateral runout of the disc, which causes vibration during braking, replace the disc.To pre-check the correct adjustment of the parking brake drive, lift the drive lever up to the stop, while you should hear about 3-4 clicks of the ratchet device.

Hand brake adjustment

If the number of clicks does not fall within the specified interval or if the car is not held by the parking brake, adjust the drive. The parking brake adjustment unit is located in the passenger compartment under the floor tunnel lining. You will need a key "10" (a socket head is more convenient). Further:

If this succeeds, the actuator is incorrectly adjusted or defective. In this case, repeat the adjustment, making it more carefully. If the re-adjustment does not lead to the desired result, check the condition of the brake pads of the rear wheels, brake discs and drive cables. Replace defective parts and adjust the parking brake actuator as described above. Install the parking brake lever boot.

Rear drum brake models

The handbrake is usually in a normally adjusted state due to the self-adjusting action of the rear brake pads. However, due to the stretching of the cable, over a period of time, the travel of the handbrake may increase too much. then it is necessary to carry out the following operations.

Place chocks under the front wheels, jack up the rear of the vehicle and secure it to the struts under the axle.

Release the handbrake completely.

On models with a catalytic converter, loosen the nuts and remove the center outlet heat shield.

Turn the nut on the cable adjuster until you hear a frictional noise from the brake pads as you turn the rear wheels by hand in the normal direction of rotation.

Loosen the nut so that the wheels rotate freely.

The handbrake should start working when the lever is on the second ratchet tooth.

After completing the adjustment, check the handbrake cables for free play and apply a little grease to the threads of the adjusting device to prevent corrosion.

Install an exhaust pipe heat shield where required.

Rear disc brake models

Place wedges under the front wheels, jack up the rear of the vehicle, and fasten securely to the struts under the axle. Remove the rear travel wheels.

Pull the handbrake lever up to the second notch on the ratchet.

On models with a catalytic converter, loosen the nuts and remove the heat shield from the center section of the exhaust manifold.

Loosen the nut on the cable adjuster.

Slide a screwdriver through the hole in the adjusting mechanism in one of the discs and turn the adjusting knob until you hear the friction of the brake pads while the disc is being rotated by hand in the normal direction.

Turn the adjusting wheel back so that the disc can rotate freely.

Repeat similar operations on the other wheel.

Tighten the nut in the cable adjuster until the brake pads start to work. Make sure the chocks on both wheels work the same.

Release the handbrake completely, tighten it again.

The discs should lock when the handbrake lever reaches the sixth ratchet tooth. If necessary, adjust this position with the adjusting nut.

Install an exhaust manifold heat shield where required.

Install the road wheels and lower the vehicle to the ground.
