I stop mazda cx 5 working principle. Option to disable I-Stop (almost permanently). Registration and initialization

The Japanese crossover is equipped with a large number of modern electronics, the proper operation of which largely depends on the quality and capacity of the battery. The correct choice and installation of the battery will help to avoid troubles on the road associated with the failure of the main components. The specificity of the Mazda CX-5 battery is the i-stop system. In this article we will tell you everything about the features of the battery, give advice on choosing, share instructions for self-replacement and battery registration.

How does the battery work

The original Mazda CX-5 battery is installed by the manufacturer. He is responsible for the performance of all electrical components in the vehicle. If the battery malfunctions, it is impossible to start the car. Let's see what is the principle of operation of this small but very important component.

The functioning of the battery is entirely based on the conversion of chemical energy into electrical energy and vice versa. In addition, the device provides a constant current, and it is thanks to the voltage stabilization that the motor can work normally.

The battery is equipped with two poles - positive and negative. The battery terminals are connected to the car, due to which the main mechanisms can perform their tasks without fail. Components that depend on an additional energy source include:

  • engine;
  • audio system;
  • air conditioning;
  • optics;
  • wipers, etc.

The principle of operation of the battery lies in the peculiarities of its structure. Often, a part consists of 6 cells, in each of which 2 electrodes from metal plates are placed. This galvanic cell supplies power to the vehicle.

Battery operation in i-stop mode

The battery for the Mazda CX-5 car is subjected to enormous loads due to the operation of the i-stop system. This is due to the constant shutdown and start of the engine while the car is stopped. Thus, the owner gets lower fuel consumption due to increased wear of the battery.

The largest consumption of current is carried out at the time of start power unit... In the future, the partial discharge of the battery is compensated by recharging from the generator. When driving on the highway, the crossover battery is charged in standard auto mode, and each stop in the city activates the i-stop (while the generator does not work).

The effect of the i-stop depends on the degree of charge. If the SOC is below 65%, the system refuses to function.

The procedure for disconnecting, connecting and replacing the Mazda CX-5 battery

The need to replace the battery with a Mazda CX-5 appears when the SOC charge level drops below 25%. With such an indicator, recovery becomes impossible. Even an inexperienced car owner can independently install, connect or remove the Mazda CX-5 battery.

To dismantle the old battery you need:

  1. Disconnect the current sensor from the negative terminal to de-energize the on-board computer.
  2. Remove all terminals.
  3. Remove the fixing bar.

The installation of the battery is carried out in the reverse order. The next step is registration and initialization of the battery.

Registration and initialization

In order for the battery to work properly, you need to know how to register the Mazda CX-5 battery. The procedure differs depending on the availability of an LCD screen. So, owners of a car without a TFT LCD must follow the instructions:

  • turn off the engine;
  • move the gearshift lever to position N;
  • press and hold the brake pedal while performing further actions;
  • by long pressing the gas to activate the battery indicator;
  • press and release the accelerator three times to deactivate the light bulb;
  • release the brake.

For a TFT LCD crossover, the circuit is as follows:

  • close the doors;
  • turn the ignition to the ON position without starting;
  • remove the warning message with the INFO switch;
  • set the gearshift lever to neutral;
  • hold the brake pedal in the following steps;
  • turn on the accelerator for 5 seconds, wait for the indicator to activate;
  • Press and release the gas 3 times (the beacon should go out).

Also, after connecting a new battery and registering it, it is necessary to initialize the Mazda CX-5 battery, since when the terminals are disconnected, the settings are reset. The algorithm is as follows:

  • start and warm up the engine;
  • hold and hold i-stop for 10 seconds;
  • with the hood closed, turn the steering wheel from one extreme position to another;
  • turn off the engine.

You can check if initialization has been completed by pressing the i-stop button. If a green light comes on, it means that the battery has fit into the work of all systems.

How to choose a battery for Mazda CX-5

The Japanese brand recommends installing the original Mazda CX-5 battery. This is due to the i-stop technology, on which the operation of the power unit of the machine is based. You can consult an authorized service center for the model. The first generation crossover was equipped with the Panasonic Q-85 battery, but today the range has grown significantly, and such well-known brands as Exide, Bosch and many others have entered the market.

To understand which battery is on the Mazda CX-5, you need to carefully study the labeling from the manufacturer. When choosing, it is important to pay attention to dimensions, capacity and starting current. The battery capacity should be in the range of 40-70 A / h, the nominal voltage is 12 V, the starting current is 300-700 A. You should also carefully consider the polarity of the device, the coincidence of the terminals. As for the dimensional characteristics, the small engine compartment requires them to withstand them especially clearly. Owners of the 2.0 engine buy batteries 202x230x172 mm (VxLxW), for 2.2 liters they choose 202x255x172 mm. The cost of the new CX-5 battery starts at 6500 rubles.

Battery marking, reviews

In order not to get confused by the abundance of assortment and purchase a suitable part, it is important to be able to read the labeling. The manufacturer puts a code on the product, decrypting which you can find out the main specifications goods.

What is indicated on the marking of the Japanese brand battery (JIS standardization):

  • battery capacity Mazda CX-5;
  • battery width, mm;
  • battery length, cm;
  • terminal arrangement, polarity (L or R).

According to the reviews of car owners, it was possible to find out that the Varta and Bosch brands are the most popular in Russia. These brands offer quality products at a competitive price. Good demand is noted for the Bosch S4 02 model (it has a starting current of 540 A and a capacity of 640 Ah). You need to understand that a car with a lot of electronics requires the installation of a high-capacity battery.

Possible problems

Like any part, the battery sooner or later becomes unusable. If the car does not start (especially in frosty weather), it is worth checking the battery performance. Possible problems:

  1. Battery swelling. If the case is swollen, the device must be replaced urgently. Deformation can be caused by elevated operating temperatures.
  2. Unpleasant sulfur smell. This is a battery leak. Breakage is also accompanied by the appearance of rust on the terminals.
  3. Low fluid level. If the amount of liquid has dropped below the lead plates, top up or replace the battery.

In order for the battery, and with it all the electronics to function properly, it is necessary to carry out diagnostics. A breakdown can be provoked by: violation of the temperature regime during operation, insufficient charging, poor-quality electrolyte and much more.

Outcome

Battery operation provides engine starting and power to all electronic systems... To extend the life of the battery, it is important to charge it on time and adhere to the operating modes. If the need for replacement has already arisen, it is not necessary to seek help at the service station. Installation, registration and initialization can be carried out independently even by an inexperienced car owner.

What should be the fuel consumption of a 150-horsepower two-liter engine that accelerates a two-ton crossover Mazda CX-5? It would seem - not small. But in fact, thanks to an intelligent smart system i-stop, which turns off the car engine even with short stops, work on Idling is reduced to a minimum. The result - the CX-5 engine consumes about one and a half times less fuel than its "classmates" ( Nissan x-trail, Tiguan, Audi Q3, Q5). However, frequent stops / starts of the engine place special demands on the power supply of the car.

Influence of the i-stop system on Mazda CX 5 battery

It is known that the battery gives the maximum current when the engine is started. Further, its partial discharge is compensated by recharging from the generator. If this is followed by a long trip on the highway, then the Mazda CX-5 battery is charged in the usual auto mode for most. When driving in an urban cycle, each stop of the car starts the i-stop system, and the generator stops working. The battery for Mazda CX-5 with i-stop, in addition to the function of the energy source for the subsequent engine start, is also superimposed on the power supply functions of all on-board systems of the car - audio system, climate control system, diagnostic systems, electrical sensors, external lighting devices and interior lighting, glass heating and mirrors, heated seats, etc.

Influence of the state of charge of the battery on the operation of the i-stop system

Not only i-stop affects the battery for Mazda CX-5. There is also a feedback - the operation of the i-stop depends on the state of the battery charge. The parameter characterizing the state of charge of the battery is expressed as a percentage and is called State of charge or simply SOC. For the i-stop system to work correctly, the SOC must be above 85%. And if the SOC is less than 68.4%, the i-stop stops working altogether.

Smart charging of the CX-5 battery

It is impossible to fully compensate for the loss of electrical energy during the operation of the i-stop system in the urban cycle, but Mazda engineers took care that even with frequent shutdowns / starts of the engine, the battery Mazda CX-5 2.0 standard equipment received maximum recharge. This was achieved through the introduction of the so-called intelligent charging system (smart charging).

When the car decelerates, caused by a decrease in the supply of fuel to the engine cylinders or by braking the car (by braking or by braking the engine), the current sensor automatically increases the voltage of the generator, thereby allowing the accumulation of additional electrical energy to charge the battery. In addition, Smart Smart Charging allows the vehicle's kinetic energy to be harnessed, reducing the load on the alternator, which also has a positive effect on fuel economy. Of course, "fast charging" with high currents is not the best way to preserve the long-term operation of any power source, but so far nothing better has been invented in this area.

IMPORTANT! USING THE “QUICK CHARGE” MODE WHEN CHARGING WITH THE CHARGER IS NOT ALLOWED. IGNORING THIS NOTICE MAY RESULT IN THE I-STOP SYSTEM LEAVING.

Charging the Mazda CX 5 Battery at Home

The intensity of the discharge depends on many factors. These include: turning on the burglar alarm, opening / closing doors / hood, the position of the automatic transmission lever (to minimize leaks, it is recommended to leave an unexploited car with the automatic transmission lever set in the "P" position) and even the presence of the vehicle access key in or near the interior of the car ("Wearable card"). Therefore, the vast majority of Mazda CX-5 owners will sooner or later need additional charging of their car's battery. It is quite possible to do this at home with the help of a special charger... Operation manual (manual) Mazda CX-5 recommends performing this procedure every 2-3 weeks.

Consider how to charge the battery on the Mazda CX 5.

First, you need to establish the very fact of the need to charge the battery, i.e. evaluate SOC. This is done by measuring the density of the electrolyte with a hydrometer. In this case, one should remember about the influence of the ambient temperature on this indicator. You can compare the density of the electrolyte at a given air temperature with the SOC indicator using tables that contain special reference books, both printed and online.

For example, at an ambient temperature of 20 degrees, SOC = 100% will correspond to an electrolyte density of 1.280 g / cm3, SOC = 85% - 1.262 g / cm3, 65% - 1.234 g / cm3, respectively. At a lower ambient temperature, the density of the electrolyte corresponding to a certain SOC level will be higher, at a higher temperature, it will be lower. It is not necessary to have a complete table of correspondences of electrolyte density to SOC levels at different temperatures on hand. It is enough to remember the casting formula:

Electrolyte density (at t = 20 o C) = measured density value + (actual OS temperature - 20) x 0.0007.

Before charging the Mazda CX 5 battery, mark the battery that has been most drained. Based on the density of the electrolyte in it, the battery charging time is selected from the tables. For example, a density greater than 1.24 means that the charge time will be 180 minutes, while a density of 1.17 will take 360 minutes to fully charge. Charge with a constant current of 10 amperes, checking and adjusting (if necessary) the amperage every 60 minutes.

Evaluation of SOC (by density of electrolyte) is carried out 6-48 hours after the end of charging. If the density of the electrolyte in one of the cans is less than 1.25, then you should think about buying a new battery.

In the autumn-winter period, the number of electricity consumers increases significantly. An additional load is provided by the above-mentioned climate control, heated glass and mirrors, heated seats, as a result of which the discharge occurs much faster in winter than in summer. At one point, the car may simply not start. Some motorists in this situation work proactively - they turn off the i-stop. You can completely forget about fuel economy in this situation. The car engine and power supply of the Mazda CX 5 operate in the same mode as in hundreds of other car models. Option two - to purchase and always carry with you an external source of electricity - an autonomous starting and charging device. This will allow, if necessary, to carry out an emergency start of the car engine.

A modern autonomous starting-charger (booster) does not take up much space. It can be used, if necessary, both to start the internal combustion engine and to replenish the charge of a standard energy source. After starting the engine, the charge of its own booster can be replenished immediately by connecting it to the car's electrical network through the cigarette lighter socket.

Replacing the Mazda CX-5 battery

It is very important to keep track of the battery charge level. If the SOC falls below 25% (the density of the electrolyte before charging is below 1.17), battery recovery will already be very problematic. Irreversible changes take place in the plates, which will not allow to gain and hold for a long time the charge necessary for the stable operation of the i-stop system.

How to change the battery for a Mazda CX 5

The procedure for replacing the battery on the Mazda CX 5 is very simple. The first step is to remove the old battery:

1. Disconnect the current sensor from the negative terminal. This will de-energize the on-board computer, preventing the possible passage of an erroneous engine control signal.
2. Remove the negative terminal.
3. Remove the positive terminal.
4. Remove the retaining bar.

Set new battery Mazda CX 5 follows 1 minute after removing the old one. During this small time gap, information about the state of the old battery will be deleted from the memory of the PCM (Powertrain control module - aka "brains"). The installation of a new battery is carried out in the reverse order of removal.

After installing a new storage battery, it must be "registered" in the system:

1. With the engine off, set the engine start switch to the ON position.
2. Set the automatic transmission lever to the "neutral" position.
3. With the brake pedal depressed:

  • press and hold the gas pedal for at least 5 seconds. The battery charge indicator and the main warning indicator should start flashing;
  • press and release the gas pedal three times. The battery charge indicator and main warning indicator should go out.

If the Mazda CX-5 is equipped with an LCD display in the instrument cluster, all doors must be closed before setting the engine start switch to ON, after installation, wait for the warning message to appear on the display, and then delete it with the INFO switch located on the steering wheel.

To check how correct the initialization of the Mazda CX-5 battery was, you must turn on the ignition, then press and hold the i-stop switch for 10 seconds. A flashing green indicator will mean that the battery initialization procedure has been successfully completed. A flashing yellow indicator means undercharge or overcharge of the battery. A permanently lit yellow indicator means that the initialization of the battery in the system has not been completed, it must be repeated.

For correct initialization of the battery, its SOC must be more than 75%.

What kind of battery can be put on the Mazda CX-5

Taking into account the specifics of the i-stop system, the manufacturer strongly recommends using the original Mazda CX-5 battery, the article of which can be specified in the Mazda catalogs. In addition, you can obtain comprehensive information on which battery to supply your Mazda CX-5 with from an authorized Mazda service center. Initially, Mazda CX-5 crossovers were equipped with 65-ampere batteries from the assembly line. GS Yuasa Q-85... Today, the range of batteries allowed for installation has expanded significantly. You can find out which battery is in the Mazda CX 5 by examining the sticker on its case. When choosing a battery that is different from the one that the car was equipped with on the conveyor, take into account not only the capacity and starting current (for models with a two-liter engine - starting current 540 A * h, for models with a 2.2 liter engine - 640 A * h), but and type ( AGM / EFB).

It is very important to pay attention to the dimensions. The extremely dense arrangement of the engine compartment obliges them to withstand them especially carefully. Owners of a two-liter engine should choose a battery corresponding to dimensions 202 x 230 x 172 mm (height x length x width), a 2.2-liter model will request a longer niche - 202 x 255 x 172 mm - battery marking

Mazda CX-5 in all trim levels has an i-stop system (analogue of a start / stop engine), what is it for? After the engine has warmed up, the i-stop system automatically turns it off when the car stops at a traffic light or in a traffic jam, and then automatically restarts the engine to continue driving. This system is designed to improve fuel efficiency, reduce exhaust emissions, and reduce noise levels while the engine is not running.

Engine stop and restart function (Vehicles with manual transmission)

1. Press the brake pedal, then depress the clutch pedal and bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
2. After the vehicle has come to a stop, hold the clutch pedal depressed and place the gear shift lever in neutral. When the clutch pedal is released, the i-stop activation indicator light (green) will come on and the engine will automatically stop.
3. To restart the engine, depress the clutch pedal (the green i-stop indicator will go out).

The function of stopping and restarting the engine (Cars with automatic transmission)

1. The i-stop system turns off the engine when, while driving, the driver presses the brake pedal and the car stops (except when the car is moving reverse). During the operation of the i-stop system, the indicator light for its activation (green) turns on.
2. After the driver releases the brake pedal when the automatic transmission selector lever is in the D / M position (but not in the fixed second gear position), the engine will automatically restart and the i-stop activation indicator (green) will turn off ... If the automatic transmission selector lever is in the N or P position, the engine will not restart even after the brake pedal is released. The engine will start after pressing the brake pedal again

Why i-stop doesn’t work, the engine doesn’t stop (doesn’t turn off)

The following are excerpts from the Mazda CX-5 user manual:
To ensure safe and comfortable vehicle operation, the i-stop system controls the stop and automatic restart function of the engine, constantly monitoring non-driving events, in particular the environmental conditions inside and outside the vehicle, as well as the operating status of the vehicle systems. The engine stops automatically when all of the following conditions are met:
- The engine was started and the vehicle was in motion for a specified period of time. Regardless of how long the engine is running, i-stop will not function if the vehicle is not moving. In addition, after the vehicle has been moving for a certain period of time and then stopped, the i-stop system will only turn on for one cycle (automatic stop and restart of the engine) while the vehicle is stopped.
- The engine was started with the hood closed.
- The engine is warm enough.

(Cars with mechanical box gear)
- Vehicle speed does not exceed 3 km / h.

- The vehicle is stationary.

- The battery is in good technical condition. The hood is closed.
- All doors and tailgate are closed.
- The driver's seat belt is fastened. Windscreen deflation is off.

- The regulator of the temperature of the air in the passenger compartment does not occupy the position of maximum heating or maximum cooling of the air.
(Cars with automatic climate control system)
- The temperature in the passenger compartment is approximately equal to the set temperature.

- The vehicle is moving at an altitude of no more than 1800 meters above sea level.
- The yellow indicator of malfunction of the i-stop system does not flash and does not light up permanently.
- The keyless entry system is working properly.
- Sufficient force has been applied to the brake pedal (to the vacuum amplifier brake system sufficient vacuum is supplied).
- The steering wheel is stationary.

(Cars with automatic transmission)
- The selector lever of the automatic transmission is in the D / M position (but not in the fixed second gear position) or in the N position.

- The automatic transmission fluid has reached operating temperature.
- The temperature of the working fluid of the automatic transmission does not exceed the norm.
- Sufficient force has been applied to the brake pedal. (Sufficient vacuum in the brake booster).
- The steering wheel is in a position where the front wheels are straight (if you apply force to the steering wheel, even when the wheels are straight, the i-stop system may not work. For the i-stop system to work, reduce the force you apply to the steering wheel).
- The driver pressed the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. The driver does not apply emergency braking.
- The car is not parked on a slope, for example, on a ramp in a multi-storey car park.

If at least one of the following conditions is met, it will take additional time for the engine to stop automatically.
- The battery is discharged because the vehicle has not been used for a long period of time.
- The battery was disconnected, for example, to replace it, and then reconnected.

If you do any of the following after automatically stopping the engine,
for safety reasons, the yellow i-stop warning lamp will illuminate and
the engine will not start automatically even if the clutch pedal is depressed (vehicles with a manual transmission) or the brake pedal is released (vehicles with automatic transmission gear). To start the engine in such a situation, follow the normal engine starting procedure.
- Open the hood.
- Unfasten the driver's seat belt and open the driver's door (the driver intends to get out of the car).

(Cars with automatic transmission)
If the automatic transmission selector lever is moved from the D / M position (but not from the fixed second gear position) to the N position or from the D / M position (but not from the second fixed gear position) to the P position with the i-stop system in operation , the engine will not restart even if the driver releases the brake pedal. The engine will restart the next time the brake pedal is pressed or the automatic transmission selector lever is moved to the D / M position (but not to the fixed second gear position) or to the R position. the selector lever of the automatic transmission should only be carried out with the brake pedal depressed).

If, after stopping the engine automatically (the gear lever on a vehicle with a manual transmission must be in neutral position), if you do any of the following, the engine will automatically start, even if the clutch pedal is not depressed (vehicles with a manual transmission) or released brake pedal (cars with automatic transmission). However, if the gear lever is not in neutral (vehicles with a manual transmission), the engine will not automatically start for safety reasons.
- Keep the i-stop switch pressed for a few seconds.

- Set the air temperature regulator in the driver's area to maximum heating or maximum cooling.
- Switch on the blowing of the windscreen.
- Release the brake pedal so that the vehicle starts to move on an incline.
- Unfasten the driver's seat belt and open the driver's door (the driver intends to get out of the car)

(Cars with automatic transmission)
- Press the accelerator pedal when the automatic transmission selector is in the D / M position (but not in the fixed second gear position).
- Move the automatic transmission selector to position R.
- Shift the automatic transmission selector lever from the N or P position to the D / M position (but not to the fixed second gear position).
- Turn the steering wheel when the automatic transmission selector lever is in the D / M position (but not in the fixed second gear position).
- Shift the selector lever of the automatic transmission to position M, and at the same time engage
the mode of the fixed inclusion of the second gear. ‘

If, after the engine is stopped automatically (the gear lever on a vehicle with a manual transmission must be in neutral position), any of the following events occur, the engine will automatically start, even if the clutch pedal is not depressed (vehicles with a manual transmission) or the brake pedal is not released (vehicles with an automatic transmission). However, if the gear lever is not in neutral (vehicles with a manual transmission), the engine will not automatically start for safety reasons.
- (Cars with automatic climate control system)
The temperature in the passenger compartment differs significantly from the temperature set using the temperature controller.
- Two minutes have passed since the start of the i-stop system.

If any of the conditions below are met, the time period that the engine will automatically stop may become shorter or the time period before the i-stop system is turned on again may become longer.
- Too high or too low ambient temperature.
- The storage battery is discharged.
- Large power consumption of the vehicle's electrical equipment.
- The i-stop system does not work if the ambient temperature is too high or too low.
- The engine may not automatically stop for a period of time after briefly disconnecting and then reconnecting the battery. In addition, after replacing the battery, the i-stop system must be reconfigured to ensure that it functions properly. To replace the battery, contact a service station. authorized dealer Mazda.

How the i-stop CX-5 system works
(youtube) XqcF8iuwek0 (/ youtube)

About three months ago, I accidentally left home, leaving the interior light on in the car, if it hadn't been for the car in five hours, I would have definitely set my battery to zero. Then I decided to take on the implementation of eliminating this jamb of the Japanese, and turn off I-Stop at one time, especially since I chose a simple TIMER long known to many electronics engineers as the basis for solving these problems.

The integral version of this timer has existed for more than thirty years, it is NE555N and its Russian counterpart KR1006VI. The cost of this microcircuit in stores varies from 30r to 50r, but this is not enough, the permissible current at the output of the microcircuit is allowed up to 200Ma, which allows you to directly connect almost any small-sized relay for 12V to it. A fully assembled timer consists of only seven parts, you just need to select their values, assemble, and check the operation of the device. There is one feature of the NE555 and KR1006VI microcircuits when they are soldered, each pin being soldered should be held with tweezers or another heat sink, they are very afraid of overheating.

The diagram shows that everything is very simple. Time-setting capacitor 22 microfarads, time-setting resistor, to obtain the relay response time of 3-6 seconds, is equal to 120-160 kom. In my version, a 220kom potentiometer is installed.

In the assembled form, we got a board with dimensions of 34.5x23mm. I did all the editing on a piece of breadboard that was lying in my trash. I made the jumpers between the parts with a thin mounting wire. I assembled it on a breadboard because I didn't want to bother with etching the board.

The block of buttons is easy to disassemble, in its left part, closed by a technological plug, there is an empty space with guides, into which I inserted the board, having previously adjusted it to size.

On the button board, red arrows mark the contacts of the I-Stop button, and with blue arrows, I marked two cuts for laying wires going to the contacts of the executive relay.

Soldered wires.

And this is how an already assembled button block looks like with outgoing 12V power wires, they must be connected to the fuse box (in the cabin under the driver's left knee) to the ACC power circuit, preferably through a 1A fuse. Not only that, under the button block there is an empty pocket for OEM navigation, in which I installed a key microswitch that turns off the power to the timer. This is in case you need to perform initialization, or in the summer you want I-Stop to start performing its duties.

The principle of operation of this entire system is as follows: We turn on the ignition, 12v power is supplied to the timer, relay K1 turns on and closes the contacts of the I-Stop button with its contacts, the charging current begins to flow through the timing R1C1. As soon as the capacitor C1 is charged to the supply voltage, the relay K1 will turn off and the contacts of the I-Stop button will open, but while the relay contacts were closed, the I-Stop system will turn off, emitting two beeps. In my version, the relay contacts are closed for 5-6 seconds. In fact, we entrust the function of pressing the I-Stop button to the timer with its executive relay, without worrying about turning it off every time the internal combustion engine is started.

What is good about this option, in my opinion, is that it does not require cardinal changes in the car circuit, at any time you can return to the normal operation of the system, and does not require large financial investments, given that I had most of the details and I had to buy only a relay for 50r and a microcircuit for 35r costs are minimal. If you count all the details, then you can keep within 200r.

P.S. I want to note that I am not a cool electronics engineer, rather it is a hobby left over from a young age, so I do not pretend, in this case, to the ultimate truth, especially since I did not offer anything new. If, based on my post, people have more recent and sensible ideas, I will only be glad of this.

And finally, if you decide to implement my proposal to disable I-Stop, then this will be YOUR decision and you are fully responsible for its result.

P. S. 2 must add Switch S1 I removed from the circuit, its installation is, of course, desirable for the rapid discharge of the capacitor when the timer turns off, but for this then it is necessary to fence a whole garden, naturally with an increase in the number of parts and of course dimensions.

The i-stop system is installed on Mazda CX-5 cars of the last years of production. Many are interested in what it is, does the system benefit the car owner, and can it be turned off?

What is i-stop

The i-stop system (i-stop) of the MazdaCX-5 is a function of intelligent stop and restart of the engine, a proprietary development of the Mazda company. To briefly describe the principle of the system's operation, it is as follows.

The car engine automatically shuts off in traffic jams, at traffic lights, when the car stops, and then automatically restarts when the driver wants to continue driving.

In more detail the logic of the system operation is presented in the table.

The engine will stop automatically when all conditions are met, depending on the availability of climate control and the type of gearbox.

Advantages and disadvantages of the system

The main purpose of the i-stop system is to save fuel, reduce noise and harmful emissions into the environment. In addition, the i-stop regulates the power of the generator (intelligent charging system), because the greatest power consumption occurs when starting the engine, and the loss of charge must be quickly replenished.

At the same time, the i-stop solves the problem that it itself creates: it is the repeated repetition of the start-stop cycle that increases the load on the battery, which also takes over the power supply of all boron systems of the car when the engine is stopped.

It must be admitted that multiple repetitions of starting and stopping the car noticeably reduce the engine resource.

This is not so critical when driving on a highway, where the car moves continuously for most of the way at an approximately constant speed. But, as practice shows, most Mazda CX-5 owners use vehicle in an urban environment, where a stop is replaced by a resumption of traffic with sufficient regularity. And if it gets stuck in a traffic jam, the engine can turn off and start several dozen times in a row, which will not add to its “health” at all.

In addition, many Mazda CX-5 users are unhappy i-stop system for purely psychological reasons. Not everyone likes "very smart" modern cars... Many old school drivers want to have complete control over every aspect of their iron horse.

How to disable permanently

One way or another, many are wondering how to disable i-stop permanently. The manufacturer did not foresee such an opportunity, so the home-grown "kulibins" got down to business.

On the car owner forums, various methods are discussed. The easiest is to disable the battery charge sensor. But at the same time, the driver himself is left without information about the battery charge, which, for obvious reasons, is unacceptable.

Various options for changing electronic circuits require specific skills and abilities. We propose to solve the problem programmatically. For this you will need:

  • notebook;
  • ELM327 adapter;
  • program

The essence of the method is as follows. The SSU software module differs from Mazda CX-5 car models with and without i-stop system:

Module view SSU for a car with an i-stop system.

View of the SSU module for a vehicle without an i-stop system.

The task is to change the module by changing the specified values.

    1. We connect the laptop to on-board computer vehicle through the adapter and launch the FORScan program.
    2. We find in the menu the item indicated in the figure.

Module SSU in a programme FORScan .

Before making any changes, be sure to backup the module!
  1. Change the values of the leftmost cells in the top two rows.

Before the changes.

After the changes.

That's all! You can turn off your laptop, turn off and turn on the car ignition. After initializing the system, the Mazda CX-5 is ready for use!

The advantage of this method is that no physical changes are made to the car's device, and all program actions are completely reversible.

How useful the i-stop system is in general is a matter of debate. Many believe that the developers have sacrificed the engine's resource for the sake of imaginary fuel consumption and fashionable environmentalism. In any case, it is your choice whether to use certain features of your personal car.
