Golf modifications 4. Volkswagen Golf IV is an excellent option. Typical problems and malfunctions

The popularity of this generation of VW Golf in Europe and Ukraine was stunning. More than 4 million pieces were produced. It was produced in six countries on four continents. Of course, in most cases, our roads are driven by Golfs imported from Europe. At least we officially sold the model in this generation. At the same time, the official fourth Golfs were adapted for our operating conditions with reinforced suspension and engine protection. When looking for chassis spare parts, you come across such springs and shock absorbers, which are called that - for cars with the “bad roads package”.

Body and interior.

The Golf's body is eternal, as mechanics say. The metal is perfectly protected from corrosion, galvanized on both sides. Despite the years, you can find a car in very good condition. Externally, the body has a classic shape and does not look outdated. Volkswagen has always been able to make cars that do not become outdated in appearance over the years, as happens with cars from Asia.

Problems could occur with door locks (this is a common failure in all cars built on the common A4 or PQ34 platform). Also, over time, some on-board equipment may also fail. The stove fan hums at first, and then just stops. The door power windows refuse to raise the windows properly, and the power window control buttons on the driver's door are often replaced due to wear or water ingress. The interior of the Golf, fourth generation, is quite functional even today. The rear seats can be conveniently folded in split proportions. There is plenty of space for second-row passengers, and a person of any size can get behind the wheel. What can I say, the standard of boarding and placement of passengers and cargo in its class, which all competitors were equal to at the beginning of the 2000s.

Popular gasoline engines

Options power units was more than enough. The basic petrol engine 1.4 16V (AHW,AXP, AKQ) is quite popular in Ukraine. The main problem of the engine is a weak and short-lived throttle valve.

Moreover, it cannot be repaired, only replaced. The most popular engine is the eight-valve 1.6 (AEH / AKL). The reliable and time-tested engine was then installed on the Skoda Octavia Tour for a long time. It didn’t surprise me with its power characteristics, but it showed good traction at the bottom. The motor is simple and reliable in design. Common problems include the radiator cooling fan and fluid leaks through the water pump gasket. The next popular gasoline engine was a two-liter with factory indexes APK / AQY AZH / AZJ. Good engine. The only main problem is the desire to constantly eat up oil. But this problem is easily repairable. Hot drivers can find versions with a 1.8 liter turbo engine AGU, ARZ, AUM. This motor has already become legendary, thanks to its wide distribution throughout model range VAG (Skoda Octavia Tour, Seat Leon, Audi A3) and good characteristics. The main weaknesses are flying ignition coils and the ventilation system crankcase gases where is the problem valve? Also, the phase regulator may require replacement after 120 - 150 thousand km. The turbine, with normal oil and regular replacement of the air filter, lives without problems. But if, nevertheless, the time has come to replace it (and based on the age of the car, this is no longer rare), buy a non-original good quality a turbine for Golf 4 is quite possible. Among gasoline engines there were also options 2.3 VR5 2.8 VR6 3.2 R32 (VR6), but this is already very rare.

Gearboxes. That rare case when an automatic is more reliable than a manual

The five-speed manual with the factory index DUU is the most problematic. If the first one turns on problematically, then this is the norm for this box. A manual transmission is not for sporty driving. With active drive, the differential rivets break and the gearbox housing is destroyed.

An automatic is a rarity for Golf. Those who got a car with a four-speed automatic transmission are very lucky. This box is reliable and there are no problems with it. Only the oil needs to be changed every 60 thousand km.

Suspension. Are there any weak points in the chassis?

Chassis Volkswagen Golf IV, in design, is no different from its competitors. There are MacPherson struts at the front and a simple semi-independent beam at the rear. But how does it all work? This model is a pleasure to drive. The car handles well and holds the road perfectly. In general, if you use high-quality spare parts for repairs, then there will be no problems with suspension system there won't be. Structurally weak points it's not in it. As for the resource, for original spare parts it is as follows: silent blocks of front control arms 60–80 thousand km; stabilizer struts 40-50 thousand km; support bearings of the front struts - up to 40 thousand km.

Everything is very easy to change, and there are no problems with maintenance. Same as steering rack, which does not live longer than 150 thousand, is restored without problems. Shock absorbers with the “bad roads” package are stiffer, but more durable than their European counterparts, and they are better to install.

Brakes are reliable and durable

The brake system of the Golf 4 will not create problems. There is only one fly in the ointment - the brake light switch. But this problem is cheap and can be solved quickly. Brake discs and pads are inexpensive to replace; there are a huge number of replacement options. When buying a Golf 4, be sure to check the operation of the handbrake and the condition of the brake hoses. The handbrake cable is stretching, and the hoses are simply overdue for replacement.

Results. Is it worth buying a used Volkswagen Golf 4?

If you gravitate toward German classics, then this option is for you. Everything here is thought out in German style and in the spirit of conservatism. Do not forget that many copies have already covered 500 thousand km, and some have exchanged their second million, so many components and assemblies will definitely require replacement. But if you managed to find a living specimen, where previous owner If you were a conscientious and careful motorist, then the Golf 4 will not create problems for you for a long time.

Golf-class models are available in the production range of almost all automakers. These are cars without pretensions, for trips “from point A to point B”, albeit in many cases very well made. Sports modifications based on these, in general, mediocre cars are a completely different matter. They use more advanced technologies, sometimes borrowed from more advanced models. high level. They have a character that can make driving fun even for the pickiest motorist. It is these flagship representatives of the golf class that will be discussed in our review.

Just ten years ago Golf 4 was one of the leaders in demand on secondary market on par with the fifth Passat. Today, of course, time has taken its toll, but you can still find a decent version of the Golf 4. And this will be an excellent choice for an inexpensive and reliable car with low operating and repair costs.

Golf 4 began production in 1997, and although the car looks very similar to the previous model, in fact it is a completely different car, built on a different platform. The Audi A3, VW Beetle, Octavia A5, Audi TT, Seat Leon and Toledo are assembled on the same platform. Spare parts for the suspension of these machines are interchangeable.

The Golf 4 was initially produced in a hatchback body with three and five doors. In 1999, production of a station wagon began, which was labeled “Variant”. The Golf 4 in the sedan was called “Bora” (for the US market - “Jetta”). It is worth knowing that the Golf 4 convertible is nothing more than a facelift of the Golf 3 convertible.

In the “base” Golf had at least two airbags, seat belts with pretensioners, ABS system, electric windows and electric mirrors. Besides basic configuration There were also “Comfortline”, “Trendline” and “Highline”. Later, it was possible to order an ESP system for a car for an additional fee. By car recent years release, one could also see window airbags (in addition to side airbags). Thanks to this, the car was one of the leaders in passenger safety in its class.

Modifications and characteristics gasoline engines Volkswagen Golf IV

The range of engines was quite wide and started with a 1.4-liter gasoline engine that produced 75 horsepower. Of course, you won’t be able to “drive” it. Moreover, when driving in traffic, this engine must be constantly revved up to high speed to keep up with the bulk of the machines. And this reduces its resource.

Further, we can designate a 1.6-liter unit with eight valves and a hundred horsepower under the hood, and the same, but sixteen-valve 105-horsepower. These are the most common and most reliable engines for Golf 4. Such engines easily cover 300 thousand km without overhaul provided that the oil is changed regularly and overheating is avoided. True, the cooling system tee of these engines often cracks, but it is very inexpensive and easy to change.

1.6-liter 110-horsepower FSI engines with direct injection were also produced. But in domestic conditions, he often “sick” due to the low quality of fuel. It is also prone to the formation of carbon deposits in the cylinder head.

The 1.8-liter 125-horsepower gasoline unit also had turbocharged versions with 150 and 180 horsepower. The naturally aspirated engine with a manual transmission is considered very dynamic, and with supercharging, this lightweight car accelerates to hundreds in just over 8 seconds. Purchasing a turbo version is associated with a certain risk, since it was not driven by pensioners at the dacha, and such a car will be “ushat” at the very least “don’t play around” (this applies primarily to the expensive turbine). But in good condition, such a device will cost a lot of money. Remember - after “annealing” on such a machine, you should not immediately turn off the engine; you need to let the engine run for some time. idle speed for turbine cooling. And the oil in these units should be changed more often than the manufacturer recommends.

But the two-liter 115-horsepower unit is very unpretentious and reliable. But subject to regular (every 90 thousand km) replacement of the timing kit along with the pump.

Engines V5, VR5, V6 and VR6 (2.3, 2.8 and 3.2 liters) give the fourth Golf excellent dynamics and can boast of durability. But besides this, they are expensive to maintain and repair. Typically, such a car usually begins to be sold only when the time has come for a major overhaul of the engine.

It’s worth saying a little about diesel. All of them are 1.9-liter. The weakest naturally aspirated SDI could produce 68 “horses”, and engines with a turbine - from 90 to 150. The diesel engines of the fourth Golf are very durable and economical, but in the case of using high-quality diesel fuel, which is not so easy to find in Russia. In general, a diesel Golf is worth buying only if you are confident in the good condition of the engine and plan on long highway runs.

The 1.9SDI motor (AGP, AQM) can be called an example of reliability, durability and low cost of maintenance. It has two drawbacks: 17 seconds to hundreds and noise.

Old school 1.9TDI with 90 (AGR, ALH) and 110 (AHF, ASV) forces have problems with the injection pump, the repair of which is relatively expensive.

Since 1999, a 115-horsepower 1.9 TDI (AJM, AUY) with pump injectors went into production. Further in the diesel range, units with capacities of 100 (BEW), 130 (ASZ) and 150 (ARL) horsepower appeared.

Compared to the old 1.9 TDI, these engines have more high performance and efficiency. True, maintenance and repair of such engines has become significantly more expensive.

The weakest 1.9 TDI lacks the expensive twin-disc flywheel and variable geometry turbine.

The undeniable advantage of these diesel engines is the absence particulate filter, and their common drawback can be called a frequently failing flow meter (on engines before 2001).

Golf 4 was sold with 5 and 6 manual transmissions and 4 and 5 automatic transmissions with manual control. All boxes can be called quite reliable. On a manual transmission, sometimes the gearshift lever could become loose. On 1.6-liter versions, sometimes there were difficulties engaging the first gear of the manual transmission. Oil change manual transmission provided every 90 thousand km, the clutch, depending on driving style, can last 130-200 thousand km.

In automatic transmissions, the oil is designed for 60 thousand km. The oil is changed partially, since its very high cleaning properties, when completely replaced, can dissolve all old deposits, which will inevitably damage the box. If the previous owner hasn’t changed the oil for a long time, the car has a high mileage, and the gearbox works flawlessly, then you shouldn’t do this either.

On versions 1.8 and more liters, the buyer could order a 4motion all-wheel drive system. The 2.8-liter version and the R32 version already have all-wheel drive as standard. A car with 4motion makes driving an unforgettable experience, but the cost of repairing this transmission and the complexity of the repair can hit the owner's pocket. It is worth knowing that on the secondary market, as a rule, either very “worn out” or very expensive Golf 4Motions (whose condition can be called good) are sold.

The body of the fourth Golf resists corrosion very well. Rust does not appear in places where there are chips for a very long time. Thanks to minimal gaps and perfectly adjusted body parts There is no aerodynamic noise at any speed. If you see traces of corrosion on the body of the Golf 4, then they are definitely offering you a damaged car.

One of the body's shortcomings is the freezing of door seals when frost sets in. To avoid this, pre-treat all rubber bands in doorways with silicone lubricant, which is sold in spray form.

The interior of the Golf 4 is a strict classic German version. Thanks to the many adjustments of the driver's seat, a driver of any size can comfortably fit behind the wheel of this car.

But using the climate control is not entirely convenient: its buttons are located far from the driver, and you have to take your attention from the road to make adjustments. Cars with conventional air conditioning do not have this inconvenience.

Over time, the plastic of the doors and front panel is wiped off, and “crickets” populate the interior. In later versions of the Golf 4, interior quality was improved.

This car does not cause any special electrical problems. Sometimes the rear windshield wiper motor may fail and the front windshield wiper linkage may become stuck. Occasionally you have to change the brake light “frog” located under the pedal.

In versions with automatic transmission, sometimes owners encounter the gearbox selector being blocked. To unlock it, you need to remove the connector from the switch and insert it back. If such a “glitch” occurs periodically, then the switch will have to be changed, since it is inexpensive.

On early models, there was a defect in the window regulators. Sometimes owners complained about the failure of the climate display and central locking.

The chassis of the Golf 4 can be described as comfortable, simple, reliable and inexpensive to maintain. The front is the popular MacPherson strut, and the rear is either a beam for front-wheel drive cars or a multi-link for 4x4.

Created with Raphaël 2.1.0A review of the Volkswagen Golf 5 can be found HERE.

The durability of Golf 4 suspension parts greatly depends on the driving style and the speed at which it passes over bumps. Like most passenger cars, the first to “give up” are the stabilizer rods and bushings (50-60 thousand km). During active travel, shock absorbers will have to be replaced at approximately 150 thousand km. Other suspension parts last an average of 100 thousand km, which is quite worthy.

Factory front pads will have to be replaced closer to 30 thousand km, the discs will last almost 100 thousand. The rear pads wear out less; they will need to be changed for the first time at about 70 thousand km.

You can repair the suspension of the fourth Golf for relatively little money - there are many options on the market for spare parts for this car for any budget.

To summarize, we can say with confidence that the Golf 4 has adopted all the advantages of previous models, adding comfort and safety to them. The car is one of the best in its class and is definitely recommended for purchase (in good condition, of course).

A selection of reviews, video reviews and test drives of the Volkswagen Golf 4:

    Crush Volkswagen test Golf IV:

Along with the legendary Passat B5, Volkswagen Golf IV is considered one of the most successful and popular models of the concern in the secondary market of Belarus. Compact dimensions and cheap maintenance are the secret of such success.

The model began to be produced back in 1997. Despite the similarities with Golf III, Golf 4 is a separate independent model built on the new A4 platform. The same platform is considered an independent car based on the F4. On the same platform, the concern produced Skoda Octavia, Audi 3, Seat Leon and other cars.

The VW Golf IV family is large. The fourth itself was offered in a hatchback body with 3 or 5 doors. Later, the Golf Variant station wagon and the Bora sedan (Jetta in America) appeared with different body lines. But the Golf Cabrio is essentially the third Golf, designed as the fourth.

Body and electronics

The dimensions of the hatchback make it easy to park and maneuver in the city. The only thing that darkens the picture is the low front bumper - you have to be careful with parking.

VW Golf IV bodies are galvanized and have a 12-year warranty against through corrosion. All elements are fitted precisely and neatly. Owners say that even after 1-2 winters, rust may not appear in those areas where chipped paint has reached the metal. So floating gaps and corrosion on a used Golf are a sign of poor repairs after an accident.

Already in the database, the manufacturer offered two airbags, ABS, electric windows, and seat belts with pretensioners. After 1999, the ESP stability control system also became available for order, which, together with side and window airbacks, made the fourth Golf a leader in terms of safety in its class.

Three additional package- Highline, Trendline and Comfortline - made it possible to expand the options of the fourth Golf. Among them are rain and light sensors, a navigation system, air conditioning, and climate control.

The sound insulation of the cabin cannot be called exemplary; for rear passengers, driving on the highway can also be uncomfortable due to the low seating position. But the rear seats can accommodate not two, but three passengers; the seats themselves are moderately hard and have lateral support.

The driver and front passenger seats are adjustable in height, and the steering wheel is adjustable in height and reach, and fits comfortably in your hands. Dashboard fourth Golf is a triumph of ergonomics and asceticism. The controls are within the driver's reach, but do not interfere with him. The cabin has many places and compartments for storing small items. The trunk volume is 330 liters, under the mat there is a spare wheel and a repair kit. Rear seats fold down to double the trunk space.

As for electronics, the rear windshield wiper often fails in the fourth Golf - its mechanism becomes sour. The same thing can happen to the front one. The solution is to replace the part; lubrication helps only temporarily. The brake light switch may also fail.

Engines

Basic among gasoline became a 1.4 engine with a power of 75 hp. It was aggregated only by “mechanics”. The owners are unanimous: the power of this engine is clearly not enough for the Golf, and the need to constantly rev the engine for satisfactory dynamics does not have the best effect on its service life. Typical problems include the ventilation system becoming clogged with crankcase gases, and oil leaks leading to premature wear of the piston rings.

The next in the line of gasoline engines are the popular and most successful 8-valve 1.6-liter 100-horsepower and 16-valve 105-horsepower units with distributed fuel injection. Good dynamics, modest fuel consumption and a service life of 300 thousand km without major interventions are the secret of their popularity. The main thing is to avoid overheating and change the oil every 90 thousand km.

The disadvantages of these engines include antifreeze leaks from the cooling system through the thermostat and cracked plastic pipes, as well as malfunctions throttle valve and ignition coils.

The same 1.6-liter volume was also produced FSI engine 110 hp with direct injection. But for these character motors the problem is with fuel system and the formation of carbon deposits in the cylinder head, which is directly related to the quality of the fuel - after all, the manufacturer recommends 98 gasoline.

The 1.8-liter petrol engine is available in two versions. Atmospheric 125 hp and turbocharged with 150 and 180 hp. depending on modification. The naturally aspirated car boasts excellent dynamics, especially in combination with a manual transmission. Turbocharged versions accelerate the fourth Golf to “hundreds” in more than 8 seconds, but if the turbine fails, the cost of replacing it is unreasonably high. And a turbocharged Golf will require more nuances in operation and maintenance.

The two-liter 115-horsepower gasoline unit is unpretentious and reliable, but it is worth remembering to replace the timing belt and pump every 90 thousand kilometers. Formed and expensive V5 2.3 (150 hp), VR5 2.3 (170 hp), V6 2.8 (204 hp) and VR6 3.2 (240 hp) unpopular on the market due to the cost of their service.

Regarding VW Golf IV diesel engines, then they all had a volume of 1.9 liters. The weak SDI developed 68 “horses”, and the turbocharged TDI versions were already driving noticeably more vigorously: 90, 101, 110, 115, 130 and 150 hp. under the hood, depending on the modification.

The weak point of the diesel 1.9 TDI (90 and 110 hp) is the injection pump, which is expensive to repair when long runs. Even more expensive to maintain, for all its advantages in terms of power and economical fuel consumption - 1.9 TDI with pump injectors (115, 1100, 130 and 150 hp, depending on the version). Among the common shortcomings of diesel engines before 2001, a malfunction of the flow meter can be noted.

Transmission

For the fourth Golf, 5- and 6-speed manual transmissions were offered, as well as 4- and 5-speed automatic transmissions with manual shift function. The owners have no complaints about either one.

Owners solve the problem of a loose shift lever in “mechanics” by replacing the shift mechanism. 1.6-liter engines with manual transmission have a problem: engaging first gear is difficult. Recommendations for extending the service life are to change the transmission oil every 90 thousand km. In general, the box lasts 120-200 thousand km. before renovation.

The automatic transmission requires an oil change every 60 thousand, despite the manufacturer’s assurances that the gearbox is “maintenance-free.”

Chassis

The VW Golf IV suspension is quite simple, maintenance is inexpensive, and reliability is high. The moderately stiff, efficient suspension holds the road quite well and is generally quite comfortable for the driver.

The fourth Golf was equipped with McPherson struts at the front and a simple H-shaped beam at the rear.

For top-end ones, starting with a 1.8-liter engine with optional all-wheel drive The rear suspension is multi-link; keeping it in good condition will be much more difficult and expensive.

On average, stabilizer struts and bushings last for 50-60 thousand kilometers. Shock absorbers are sold out after 150 thousand. The remaining suspension elements last about 100 thousand km. But repairing the suspension of the fourth Golf is not burdensome, because finding spare parts is not a problem, and they cannot be called expensive.

Depending on the driving style, the front set of brake pads will serve the owner for 20-30 thousand km, the rear ones - 60-70 thousand km. Brake discs are used after 80-90 thousand km.

After 100-150 thousand km, the steering rack makes itself felt by knocking.

Total

The number of modifications of the VW Golf IV can confuse a potential buyer - the choice is great. Three- and five-door hatchbacks (“hot” and not so), Variant station wagon, Jetta and Bora sedans, convertible... Choose - I don’t want to.
Already in the initial version Golf configuration well equipped: at least two airbags, ABS (from the end of 1999 - and ESP, air curtains - from mid-2002), central locking, power accessories, height-adjustable steering column.

Body and electrical equipment

The anti-corrosion resistance of the VW Golf IV body is very high: this is evidenced by the 12-year factory warranty against through corrosion (and 3 years on paintwork), and by the fact that even cars that have driven on our roads for more than one winter carry traces of rust only in one case - if the car was in an accident and was poorly repaired. Cars of the first years of production have complaints about assembly: water often gets into the interior, the problem is solved by adjusting the position of the door or replacing the seals. The reliability of electrical equipment is also not the best strong point Golf: there are frequent cases of failure of the immobilizer, fuel level sensor, power windows and other electronic equipment.

Engines and transmissions

Ruler Volkswagen engines Golf IV is one of the largest in its class. There are twelve petrol and seven diesel engines to choose from. There is steady demand in our market diesel modifications, and among gasoline versions, the overwhelming majority of offers are 1.4 16V (75 hp) and 1.6-liter modifications (101, 105, 110 hp). Eight-valve engines are considered the most unpretentious and reliable: according to experts, with timely maintenance without repairs, these engines overcome the bar of 300-400 thousand kilometers. However, these power units have their drawbacks - for example, copies of the first years of production had difficulty starting the car in winter.

Twenty-valve 1.8-liter engines have a longer list of shortcomings: they are sensitive to the quality of fuel and oil, despite compliance with maintenance regulations, cases of premature timing belt breakage have been noted; the tensioner of the chain connecting the camshafts rarely lasts more than 200 thousand km. Turbocharged versions of the 1.8-liter engine are considered more reliable, but in our market it is difficult to find a copy with a “live” turbine, and the cost of repair or replacement can completely kill the love for cars with the magic Turbo nameplate.

The powerful Golf versions with five-cylinder (2.3 l) and six-cylinder (2.8 and 3.2 l) engines stand apart. They have a timing chain drive with a service life of approximately 200 thousand km, so they only require oil and filter changes. There are no complaints about the reliability of these engines, but repairing these units is expensive.

In order for the Golf to serve faithfully for many years, you must follow a few basic rules: motor oil and the filter needs to be changed every 15 thousand, air filter and spark plugs - every 60 thousand, and the timing belt (together with the tension and idler pulley) - every 90 thousand km.

All Golf IV diesel engines are 1.9 liters with direct fuel injection. This generation of VW diesel engines is rightfully considered one of the best in the world, but it also has its own subtleties of maintenance and operation. Until 2000, the Bosch EDC fuel pump was responsible for supplying fuel to these units, then new diesel engines with pump injectors appeared. In terms of reliability and durability, diesel versions with pump injectors are preferable, but the cost of repairing these engines can be called astronomical: one injector costs at least 650 USD. (and there are 4 of them in total). Of the malfunctions inherent diesel engines One can note the failure of air flow sensors from Bosch (mainly due to untimely change of the air filter).

The Golf IV family was equipped with manual 5- and 6-speed transmissions. manual gearboxes Naturally, almost all modifications could be aggregated “automatically”. Manual transmissions are considered less reliable than automatic boxes: there have been cases of mechanical failure after 200 thousand kilometers.

But there are no complaints about the “automatic machines”. They are considered maintenance-free, but experts advise changing the oil in an automatic transmission after 60 thousand kilometers or every three years.

Suspension and braking system

The Golf IV suspension (McPherson strut in front, semi-independent H-beam in the rear) is one of the main advantages of the model. It is characterized by high reliability and maintainability. The service life of suspension parts is average: struts and stabilizer bushings lateral stability require replacement every 40-50 thousand km, shock absorbers, ball joints, steering rods, wheel bearings They take care of 80-100 thousand km. And by 100-120 thousand km the steering rack may begin to tap and leak. There have been cases of failure of the power steering pump.

Main problems brake system- over time, ABS sensors fail, sealing washers on brake hoses become sour. Front brake pads wear out at 20-40 thousand km, rear brake pads at 70-80 thousand km. Brake fluid must be changed every 40 thousand kilometers or every two years.

Let's sum it up

Many people are mistaken in thinking that the VW Golf is a role model in its class.
Volkswagen Golf IV 1997 - 2003 clearly falls short of benchmark status, as evidenced by its shortcomings and TUV reliability rating. However, popularity fourth generation there is no doubt about it, which means that buyers are willing to pay for a big name, reputation, and the advantages that the Golf IV has.
