The Mazda CX-7 is one of the few models that combines sporty design and driving pleasure with the space and functionality of a true SUV.



It has a stylish and non-trivial design with a swift and streamlined body. The roof flows into the hood in a smooth line; the prominent front arches seem to have been specially inflated to accommodate 18-inch wheels, and the rear axle arches even had to climb onto the windows.

Two “barrels” of the headlights are visible through the transparent lenses. The rear light fixtures have an even more unusual arrangement. The wide front air intake is not only an aggressive detail, but also protects the radiator from overheating.

The build quality, of course, is decent (except that the lid of the armrest box is slightly loose, but we can attribute this to this test unit), the door trim is interesting and of high quality, but the plastic in the dashboard and on the steering wheel core is hard.

The red “strip” of the on-board computer moved here from the “six”. It contains a large amount of information, but readability is far from ideal; In addition, the screen glares in the sun.

The Bose sound system once again pleased with its clear and high-quality sound, and the climate control (only single-zone is available) barely cooled the air in the cabin to 18°C ​​after several hours of operation.

The steering is like on the MX-5: with polished “glossy” plastic and a convex core. But it’s inconvenient to honk: you don’t need to press on the entire bulge, but only on its center. But the seats are good. They may not have a sports grip, but their anatomical shape allows you to sit tightly and very comfortably. And you don't need to hold on to the steering wheel!

By the way, the steering wheel here has variable force: at low speeds it is filled with noticeable heaviness, and at high speeds the sharpness subsides and a slight play appears, protecting against accidental changes in trajectory. It is worth noting that it will be more difficult for tall people to get comfortable: the column is adjustable only in height.

The CX-7 drives slower than the MPS 3. This is not surprising, because the crossover is 150 kg heavier, and the 2.3-liter turbo engine is derated to 236 hp. pp. to digest 95 gasoline.

If the Mazda3 MPS “didn’t know” what to do with such a “herd”, then the “seven” is a little lacking: acceleration to 100 km/h in less than 8 seconds is, of course, not bad. But at the same time, the maximum capabilities of the CX-7 are limited to 181 km/h. It will be inconvenient when a baby Corsa or Yaris passes you on the German Autobahn...

You need to get used to the “box”: in order for the “automatic” to hold speed, the accelerator has to be pushed all the way to the floor, otherwise the exceptional adaptability will force it to switch to a higher gear “at the wrong time”. (By the way, it’s not difficult to navigate here, since even in “drive” mode, the “automatic” tells you which gear is engaged).

If you don’t look after him properly, then at 90 km/h, or even earlier, he will switch to “sixth” on his own initiative, trying to save fuel. However, if you believe the flow meter readings, you can’t save much: the most immodest consumption according to the passport was 15.3 liters (in the urban cycle), and we were shown on the screen, on average, as much as 24.7 liters! I don't want to believe...

In any case, if you expect dynamic driving, you should not trust electronic gear shifting. If you are not lazy and switch the gearbox selector to mechanical mode, the CX-7 appears much more sporty than it seemed before...

Mazda combines successful dynamics with decent behavior where the asphalt ends. Four-wheel drive- or rather, front wheel drive with elements of the full crossover inherited from the Mazda6 MPS. As soon as the front wheels “step” onto a slippery surface, the differential will instantly transfer part of the torque to the rear wheels, and they will help the front ones.

The huge ground clearance (208 mm!) allows you to forget about curbs (or curbs - whatever you like), but the approach and departure angles will not allow you to break away off-road. But driving around a traffic jam on the grass is easy!
