CONSUMER ANALYSIS

STATED FEATURES: Fully synthetic, multi-grade motor oil for gasoline and diesel engines, developed using the most modern technologies using the latest multifunctional additive packages. Provides guaranteed starting and lubrication of the engine in winter at significant negative temperatures (up to -40 ° C), as well as reliable protection during overloads and high temperatures Oh. It has excellent anti-friction properties, which leads to reduced friction and wear. Tested for catalyst compatibility. Developed using a "trisynthetic" formula based on high quality polyalphaolefins and esters using a multifunctional additive package. The use of oil in modern engines ensures compliance with Euro-2 and Euro-3 requirements for the level of toxicity of exhaust gases.

TEST RESULTS

Kinematic viscosity at 100 °C 14.41 mm 2 /s, viscosity index 182, base number 8.95 mgKOH/g, density 856.6 kg/m 3, dynamic viscosity according to ASTM D5293 at -35 °C 5102, change kinematic viscosity at 100 °C -28.48%, pour point -45 °C, acid number after oxidation for 5 hours 1.65, contamination factor after oxidation 14.2.

PECULIARITIES: for all parameters measured during testing, this sample fully complies with current standards. A sufficiently high value of the alkaline number makes it possible to assume a sufficiently high saturation of the multifunctional additive package. The results of high-temperature tests indirectly indicate a large reserve of base oil life. A fairly low acid number indicates effective work additive package in terms of neutralizing high-temperature oxidation products, and in addition allows us to draw a conclusion about the resistance of oil components to high temperatures. In terms of dynamic viscosity, this participant also meets the standards with a fairly large margin. That is, at subzero temperatures the required crankability of the engine crankshaft is ensured. The contamination coefficient value also turned out to be one of the lowest, which may indicate good stability of the base oil. But the pour point turned out to be not the best, although quite acceptable.

Today we will look at 4 main and popular products that are approved for the turbocharged Porsh Cayenn. It will be relevant for both diesel and gasoline engines.

Let’s say you have a regular maintenance and you need to change consumables and fluids in the engine. The German manufacturer recommends the use of the purest 100% PAO synthetics for the engine with a viscosity of 0w40. This is the most fluid and durable motor oil among all oil viscosities. Here we have decided.

Everything is clear here, but which brand to choose, what is more preferable: Mobile, Motul, Liquid Moly, Castrol?!

Usually the manufacturer fills in the original Castrol 0w40, made in Germany, usually available only in liter packaging. This product differs significantly in quality from what is supplied to our Russian market. In general, by the way, if you go to Europe, be sure to buy a local Castrol for comparison; you will feel the difference from the first minutes of starting the engine, not to mention operating the car.

Castrol Edge 0w40 in a Porsche Cayenne engine

Nevertheless, let's look at the cattrol that is officially supplied to our market and is suitable for Cayenne - this is with an A40 approval. The updated Titanium line with an improved formula of extreme pressure and anti-wear additives is compatible with turbocharged engines.

Quite stable motor oil, pumps well at low temperatures, tested at "- 34C", ensured excellent engine starting. During normal operation, the car showed good results. The oil provides stable lubrication and can withstand normal heating temperatures without overload. But as we know, this is a Turbocharged Porsche, and without pressing the accelerator pedal all the way, it is simply impossible, otherwise why bother taking this car at all.

Castrol FST 0w40 in turbo mode - test

In this operating mode, we also checked the oil for wear. And here the results are slightly different. That is, when driving in a mode close to the red zone, the oil already needed to be changed at 8 thousand km. Plus, I had to add up to 3 liters of engine oil.

On increased speed the oil worked less efficiently than when driving in normal mode. Oil burnout affected the quality of the oil film, and when examining the engine, the surface of the parts was covered in a small black deposit, which indicates that this product cannot cope with elevated temperatures and burns out a little, not critical, of course, for such operation, but that’s all same. Plaque indicates that the oil will not provide good lubrication of the parts, which will lead to increased wear, and therefore, the engine will collapse faster than desired.

If you like this brand and you fill in Castrol 0w40 in a Porsche, then it is advisable to flush the engine with SAE 40 oil or long-term flushing before the change, so that the newly filled oil works efficiently and the parts remain as clean as possible. In case of aggressive use of the car, it is advisable to change it once every 8-10 thousand km. And don’t forget to check the oil level and top it up; you absolutely must not leave a turbo engine without lubrication.

However, for example, Castrol, which is sold in Germany or in the European Union, shows excellent results, so if you have such an opportunity, be sure to buy it and try it.

Mobil oil (Mobil1) for Porsche Cayenne application results.

Now let’s look at the following product with A 40 approval. This Finnish product has proven itself quite well as an inexpensive oil in the flagship viscosity segment.

But as for its use in Cayenne, here the product has not proven to be effective enough. During normal operation, oil consumption amounted to 2 liters per 10 thousand km, which exceeds permissible norm specified by the manufacturer. The product, of course, is compatible with a turbo, but under heavy load, close to the red arrow, the waste was up to 0.8 liters per 2000 km, which is a lot. A black coating was observed on the engine parts after a mileage of 38,000 km, which indicates that the oil did not cope effectively enough with the increased temperature of the engine heating, and therefore the protection of the Porsche Cayenne biturbo engine.

Analysis of used Mobil 0w40

Having collected some used mobile phone, the analysis showed an excess of chips and soot in the oil, which indicates that the additives are not doing their job and are reaching their limit earlier than intended. The fumes also affected the throttle response of the engine; the power dropped noticeably during acceleration. When running the car on the slipway, diagnostics showed a loss of power of 10 hp.

If you use mobile 0w40, then it is advisable to use it with additional antifriction additive, and flush the engine with oil, washing away carbon deposits and sludge that are formed during the combustion process and deposited on the parts. Keratek will additionally provide better chain properties of the lubricant, which will reduce engine wear and engine oil waste.

When to change Mobil engine oil in Porsche

Make the change when the mileage is no more than 10,000 thousand km in mixed mode. If the car is constantly operated in a mode close to the red zone, then replace it at 7-8 thousand. As for the pumpability of the mobile in cold weather down to -33C, everything is fine here. The Finnish product 0w40 ensured an excellent engine start without any hitches. That is, the oil remained fairly fluid and did not thicken in the cold, which indicates good quality.

In general, the Finnish product is good and a turbo can be used in a Porsche; it corresponds to its price and declared quality.

Continued to see two of the most effective products for Porsche engines. Very interesting results from the use of German and French oils.

Oils that guarantee starting capability down to minus 35°C are entirely synthetic and the most expensive. Today almost all foreign manufacturers have these. Among domestic ones, we found 0W40 oil in only two - Utech from Yukos and AGA from AGI AutoMag LLC.

Let's divide the class into groups

Motor oils are divided not only into classes (by viscosity), but also into groups (by quality level). There are several rating systems. The most well-known American classification is by API: oils for gasoline engines are assigned the index SG, SH, SJ, SL, SM - the farther the second letter is from the beginning of the alphabet, the higher the ability of the oil to withstand loads. The European classification ACEA (designations A2, A3, A4) is becoming increasingly popular. Here, the higher the number, the higher the quality level. For diesel engines use other combinations of letters and numbers. It is permissible to fill in oil that meets or exceeds the quality level required by the car manufacturer. This time we decided to compare only oils within each group, so leaders appeared in each of them.

Physico-chemical properties were checked against the requirements of GOST R 51634-200 and the SAE j-300 Dec 99 standard, and quality compliance with the API group was checked using the “Sliding Ring” device (ZR, 2006, No. 11). According to the “ring” test, points were given: the more points there are, the more likely varnish deposits form on the pistons and cylinders. A lot of deposits are bad for an engine, especially a highly accelerated one.

Viscosity was measured both at 100°C (we monitored oil consumption through a calibrated hole per minute) and at minus 35°C (we determined the shear force in the rubbing pair, that is, dynamic viscosity). If the dynamic viscosity is greater than 6200 MPa.s, the starter is unlikely to crank the crankshaft.

We checked the pour point at which the oil thickens so much that it no longer drips. For the 0W40 class it will, of course, be below minus 35°C. However, at such a low temperature, the engine may not start for another reason, even if it is spun up.

We looked at the ash content. According to the standard, it should not exceed 1.3% (the lower, the better). If the norm is exceeded, wait for soot to form.

GOST is overboard

Of the 14 purchased samples, two were beyond the requirements of the standards. Tecsint SX oil does not correspond to the declared 0W40 class - in severe frost the starter most likely will not crank the crankshaft, Excellium has gone beyond the standard for ash content - 1.48 instead of the permissible 1.3%.

How to choose oil

Having carefully studied the results obtained, we were convinced that no one had succeeded in making an oil that was the best in all respects. Therefore, you need to approach your choice creatively.

If your car's engine is already worn out, pay attention to the minimum ash content: why pollute? And if the engine is new, it is better to choose an oil with a minimum score in the “varnish formation” column.

Do you have any doubts? Then rely on our arrangement, in which we took into account all three parameters (viscosity, ash content, varnish formation) and, having assessed each in points (from 1 to 5), we received comprehensive assessment. In it, we considered each parameter to be an equal “player”. If one of them seems more important, make an informed choice based on the tables presented.

Engine oil with a viscosity of 0W40 was developed to protect the engine from increased abrasion, as well as to increase its service life. Thanks to its excellent viscosity coefficient and unique properties, it removes excess thermal energy from rubbing parts. In addition, it creates a thin film that covers the entire body of the metal part. As a result, the operating time of the motor is extended.

Advantages

Maximum suitability for use in the Russian climate. The properties of the composition allow it to easily withstand severe frosts. Viscosity is characterized by high fluidity. IN climatic conditions Thick formulations are used at elevated temperatures.

The viscosity coefficient of the lubricating fluid 0W40 makes it possible to operate it in a wide temperature range (from – 40 to + 35 degrees). In principle, this parameter is set by the manufacturer himself. Included lubricants from different manufacturers a certain package of various components is included. Therefore, the main characteristics of the lubricant may have certain differences.

Compound

A special technological process is used to produce 0W40 oil. It is divided into several categories:

  1. Mineral water;
  2. Synthetics;
  3. Semi-synthetic.

A special package of additives is added to each composition.

Mineral compositions are obtained by distillation followed by refining. They can only be used in legacy power plants. 0W40 oil does not have a pure mineral base, since synthetics are added to it. Of course, such a product is expensive, but its characteristics become better.

For production synthetic oil artificial components are used. As a result, it becomes more fluid. 0W40 on a synthetic basis makes it easier to start the engine in severe frosts.

Due to minimal evaporation, this oil can be used in very hot climates. Excellent antioxidant properties, as well as resistance to the waxing process, increases the service life of the motor oil until it reaches its end. complete replacement. With such lubrication, the engine works great in city mode, where it experiences heavy loads.

Semi-synthetic products have the properties of both of the above products. On this basis, oil is produced for engines operating at medium load.

Liqui Moly 0w40

Among all samples with a viscosity of 0w40, the German lubricant Liqui Moly has the highest cost. A five-liter canister costs approximately 2,800 rubles. The quality of the lubricant from Liqui Moly has received approval and approval from most leading car manufacturers.

The performance characteristics differ from analogues in the highest quality. With this oil, the engine starts easily at very low temperatures. Moreover, all rubbing surfaces receive a sufficient amount of lubricant at the time of startup.

In addition, due to the high quality of the oil, fuel consumption is noticeably reduced. The disadvantage of 0w40 is its insufficient cleaning properties. Tests have shown that a lot of soot forms on the surface of the cylinders and carbon deposits appear. As a result, operating time is reduced piston rings, they have to be changed frequently.

Among all similar oils, Liqui Moly has a long aging period. This lubricant can be used much longer than others. Moreover, she practically does not burn out.

Each driver himself chooses the most suitable oil for his car. 0W40 is of high quality and will be a reliable protector of the internal combustion engine at any temperature. In addition, it will make it easier to start the engine in winter.

A car enthusiast, especially a beginner, in order to independently choose the oil that is ideal for his car and its operating conditions, must have at least a little knowledge of the information contained on the packaging. The data indicated on the label of the canisters contains encrypted characteristics, thanks to which even a slightly technically savvy person can find out what properties the lubricant has and what tasks it is capable of performing. Considering that there are many brands and brands of different lubricants on the market, it could be very confusing if each manufacturer labeled their types differently. Therefore, it has long been customary to designate the main properties and characteristics with certain values according to certain standards.

How to decipher the symbols

Let's look at the meaning of the lubricant with the designation 0W40.

Initially, lubricating fluids were divided into eight winter and nine summer ones based on the dependence of viscosity on temperature changes. This division was introduced by the Association of Automotive Engineers at the beginning of the last century and received its name SAE (an abbreviation for Society of Automotive Engineers). Viscosity began to be designated by a numerical index. To make it more clear, summer lubricants are designated by a number, and those suitable for winter use are designated by the addition of the English letter W - Winter. Until the middle of the last century, this division was relevant, and in the cold season they used oils marked W, less viscous, and in warm times - summer, thicker ones:

  • 30 – intended for temperatures up to 25°C;
  • 40 – up to 40°С;
  • 50 – up to 50°С;
  • 60 – above 50°С;
  • 0W – intended up to minus 35°C;
  • 5W – up to minus 30°С;
  • 10W – up to minus 25°С;
  • 15W – up to minus 20°С;
  • 20W – up to minus 15°C.

In the fifties of the last century, an all-season product was invented, suitable for work in both cold and warm weather. Then it was decided to label it with a double value, as in our case - 0W-40.

Thus, it becomes clear that this type of lubricant can be safely used at temperatures from minus 35°C to 40°C heat.

Basic basis

0W40 oils are produced exclusively from high-quality synthetic bases. The lubricant has a rather high price, for which the car owner receives a number of advantages compared to semi-synthetics and mineral water, which are sold at a lower price level and at first glance may seem more attractive.

Synthetic motor fluid is produced by mixing a synthetic base with high quality additives. In urban operating conditions, the car has to be started and turned off frequently. In winter, in cold weather, all this causes enormous damage to the engine. It heats up, cools down, and the same thing happens with the liquid in it. Therefore, there was a need for a lubricant whose properties and quality do not particularly depend on external factors.

The mineral base was not able to satisfy such needs and ensure stable product characteristics, so chemist scientists developed a technology for the production of a synthetic product based on hydrocracking and using polyalphaolefins. This type of oil is intended for cars operated in extreme weather conditions (sudden temperature changes), during city driving in start-stop mode in constant traffic jams.

Benefits of synthetic oils

  • The synthetic base is distinguished by its stability, immunity to the negative influence of external influences and resistance to negative processes occurring inside the engine, such as extremely high temperatures and oxidation.
  • There is no need to introduce a large number of additives into the composition, since the synthetic base has the main effect.
  • Due to the fact that synthetics are not subject to oxidative processes, the additives in them retain their properties for a longer time.
  • It does not degrade under the influence of high temperatures that inevitably occur in the cylinders.
  • Due to good lubricating properties, friction is reduced and heating is reduced.
  • The film created by oil is particularly strong, maximally protecting rubbing parts.
  • Stable fluidity at different temperatures ensures good pumpability, facilitating engine starting, and avoids oil starvation cold engine, thereby also extending its service life.
  • Due to the cleanliness and small amount of impurities, less deposits, varnish and sludge are formed during operation.

Conclusion

The correct selection of lubricants plays an important role in the operation of machines. SAE 0W40 engine oil is best suited for use in Russian conditions, especially in winter.

But, while ideal for new cars, it may be contraindicated for used cars. Worn oil seals and oil scraper rings may not hold it due to the fact that the oil is not thick enough, and the gaps and wear are already increased.
