What kind of oil is in the box of a VAZ 2114. Drain the old oil

Correct operation of the transmission unit on the VAZ 2114 is only possible with timely maintenance of the gearbox. One of the important aspects of maintenance is replacing the lubricant. So that the checkpoint does not experience oil starvation if there is underfilling, you need to know how much oil is in the VAZ 2114 box.

[Hide]

How to determine the required amount of oil for a VAZ 2114 gearbox?

According to official data, the transmission volume in VAZ 2114 cars is 3.5 liters. But in practice, the amount of fluid to be replaced can be 3.3 liters. This is due to the fact that when the used lubricant is drained, a certain amount of oil remains in the gearbox on the pulleys and walls.

If, when replacing, the transmission unit is flushed or major renovation, you will need 3.5 liters of liquid. It must be taken into account that during the operation of the car, natural wear and tear of parts occurs, which leads to an increase in the oil level. This is due to the fact that the constituent elements of the gearbox and its housing lose a certain volume. But the replacement level is in this case will be no more than 50-100 grams.

Which lubricant to choose?

Before refueling consumables you need to decide on the choice of oil for the VAZ 2114 gearbox, the quality of the unit’s operation will depend on this. The manufacturing plant advises consumers to choose one of three categories of lubricants.

The KOSSS102 channel talked about the choice of consumables for transmissions of VAZ 2114 cars.

Allowed use of oils:

  • mineral based;
  • with a synthetic base;
  • based on semi-synthetics.

In principle, any fluid can be used, but it is important that it meets the specifications recommended by the manufacturer:

  1. 75W-90. Synthetic consumables are characterized by good lubricating properties. Their influence makes it possible to ensure optimal operation of the machine’s transmission under operating conditions in severe frost. The main disadvantage of synthetic oils is the loud noise that the gearbox begins to make after filling compared to semi-synthetics. If you choose a lubricant with a viscosity grade of 75W-90, it is important that it meets the GL-4 specification.
  2. 85W-90. The semi-synthetic consumable has good performance characteristics. The use of such oils is more appropriate in Vehicle ah with a solid mileage. The cost of such lubricants is less compared to synthetic substances. According to the API standard, the product must be at least GL-4.
  3. It is allowed to use mineral lubricant with viscosity type 80W90. The main disadvantage of this oil is its susceptibility to low temperatures. In severe frost, the mineral lubricant becomes thicker and loses its characteristics.

In addition to these points, when choosing a lubricant, it is important to consider the following nuances:

  • design features of the box car gears, as well as the machine drive;
  • climatic conditions in which the vehicle is used, in particular if the region is characterized by frequent and sudden temperature changes;
  • the time of year during which the vehicle is used more intensively;
  • the volume of loads that fall on the gearbox under different operating modes, as well as their nature;
  • the impact of additives in the liquid on individual components of the unit.

The Multi Dads channel spoke in detail about the choice transmission lube for gearboxes.

How often should you change the oil?

In order for the gearbox to operate without interruption, the lubricant in it must be replaced at regular intervals.

According to official data specified in the service manual, the procedure for changing consumables in the transmission should be carried out every 60 thousand kilometers. Or this must be done after four years of operation of the machine. The last option is relevant for motorists who do not travel 60 thousand km during the specified time.

But in practice, in order to prevent problems with the operation of the unit, when choosing a replacement interval you need to:

  1. Check the lubricant by touch. Over time, solid particles begin to form in the consumable material, which indicates that its service life is coming to an end. If present, the fluid is replaced.
  2. Diagnose the color and smell of consumables. After a certain mileage, the oil becomes dark, but the presence of sediment will indicate the need to replace it. In addition, an unpleasant odor will indicate the low quality of the consumable. If the fluid smells like burning, it must be replaced.
  3. Periodically monitor the condition of the seals, especially if synthetic fluid is poured into the car.
  4. Always change the gearbox oil after purchasing a used car.

Therefore, taking these points into account, the need for a change may arise earlier than established by the manufacturer’s regulations. Reviews from VAZ 2114 car owners show that many compatriots change the lubricant after 25-30 thousand kilometers. It is recommended to adhere to this indicator if the vehicle is used frequently and intensively.

The channel “Secrets of Perekupa” told more about what will happen if you do not change the oil in the transmission unit in a timely manner.

Types of VAZ 2114 gearboxes

Domestic VAZ 2114 models can be equipped with two types of transmission units - old and new. Therefore, before performing the replacement task, it is necessary to determine exactly what type of gearbox is installed on the car. Old-style units are not equipped with dipsticks that allow you to check the lubricant level.

The new type of transmissions have a meter. To accurately determine the type of unit, you need to open the engine compartment and look for the dipstick. The level diagnostic meter is located opposite the driver's seat. It can be seen under the air filter pipe. At the end of the probe there is a black rubberized ring.

Checking the amount of oil in the gearbox

There are two options to diagnose the lubricant level in the system. You can use a probe, if possible, or check visually if it is not available.

Checking with a dipstick

Diagnostics is performed as follows:

  1. The car is placed on a flat surface.
  2. If the check is carried out after a trip, the engine and gearbox must be allowed to cool. This will take about fifteen minutes. During this time, the lubricant will have time to drain back into the transmission housing.
  3. The car hood opens.
  4. The dipstick is removed from the unit. Take a clean rag and wipe the meter to remove any remaining liquid.
  5. Then it is installed back. This must be done most carefully so as not to touch the walls of the gearbox with the dipstick.
  6. The meter is removed from the hole and the consumable level is checked. It is desirable that the volume of liquid corresponds to the MAX mark. If the level is lower, additional lubricant is required.

Kirill Zbruenko spoke about checking the volume of the substance in the gearbox using the example of a VAZ 2115; on a Four-wheeler, the procedure is performed in a similar way.

Checking without a dipstick

On older cars, the procedure for diagnosing the volume of lubricant is performed as follows:

  1. To check, you will need a garage with a pit or an overpass where the vehicle is driven. If this is not possible, the front of the car is raised on a jack.
  2. The protective pan is dismantled. To do this, unscrew all the bolts securing it.
  3. Using a wrench, unscrew the cover located on the transmission.
  4. Then a screwdriver or other similar object is lowered into the gearbox hole. It is important that it is clean.
  5. Ideally lubricant should reach the bottom thread of the hole on the crankcase. If this is not enough, then a special syringe with a tube attached to its tip is used to add liquid. An ordinary medical device is not suitable for these purposes; it is necessary to use a technical one.

How to change the oil in a VAZ 2114 gearbox yourself?

You can change the lubricant in the domestic “four” with your own hands. To do this, it is important to prepare all the tools and prepare the car for the task.

Required Tools

Materials needed for replacement:

  1. New oil. The lubricant that needs to be poured into the transmission must be selected taking into account technical characteristics cars.
  2. Dry and clean rags. It is important that the rags are lint-free.
  3. An old container into which waste liquid is drained. The volume of the tank should be at least five liters.
  4. 17 wrench, it is recommended to prepare a socket tool. It will have a hexagonal recess, thanks to which you can unscrew the drain plug. When using a regular key, you need to be careful. If the edges are damaged during the task, a new cover will be required.
  5. Gloves.
  6. Probe for level diagnostics.
  7. A hose with an installed funnel or a technical syringe with a connected pipe.

Preparatory activities

Before you begin the task, you need to warm up the car. Then the engine stops, you need to wait about fifteen minutes, this will allow the substance to drain completely. If the vehicle is equipped with a sump guard without holes, it will have to be removed. Otherwise, it will be impossible to access the drain cover. To complete the task, you need to unscrew the bolts with a wrench and dismantle the protection.

User Denis Onishchenko spoke in more detail about preparing a car for replacing transmission fluid and performing this process.

The procedure for replacing the lubricant in the box of a new VAZ 2114

The change procedure is as follows:

  1. Gloves are put on and all the equipment is prepared. The first actions are performed from under the bottom of the car.
  2. There is a drain plug on the gearbox; place a container under it.
  3. The lid unscrews wrench, but is not completely extracted.
  4. The following actions are performed from above. The housing of the air filter device in the engine compartment must be removed. To do this, unscrew four screws and use a screwdriver to loosen the clamp on the clamp. Then the filter element is removed from the hose.
  5. The lower part of the device is detached from the vehicle. The replacement procedure can be complicated by the fact that the hood lock cable will interfere with its implementation.
  6. Then the fasteners are disconnected, and the filter element housing is placed next to it.
  7. The surface around the dipstick must be cleaned; you can use a brush for this. This will prevent dust and contaminants from getting inside the transmission unit after it is removed.
  8. Then, under the bottom of the car, the transmission drain plug is completely unscrewed. The cover must be removed gradually until the lubricant begins to seep through it. Then the plug is quickly removed from the installation site.
  9. To completely drain the lubricant, you need to wait about half an hour. If the engine has not been warmed up beforehand, it will take longer.
  10. After draining the waste substance, the plug is screwed in, but not all the way.
  11. From the engine compartment side, a hose with a funnel installed at the other end is inserted into the fill hole. About two hundred grams of new lubricant are refilled. We must wait until the oil flows down and displaces the old substance with a fresh composition. You can find out about this when brown grease comes out of the box. Then fresh liquid will begin to flow.
  12. The drain plug is screwed in until it stops.
  13. New oil is poured into the transmission unit through a funnel. Level control is performed using a dipstick. Ideally, the lubricant will be between the minimum and maximum marks on the meter. The exact volume of liquid that can enter the box depends on how much of the substance spilled out of it. After filling, you need to wait about five minutes for the oil to distribute through all channels, then check the level again. If adding lubricant is not required, wipe the fill valve with a clean rag and reinstall it.
  14. The next step is to clean the breather; this element is required to equalize the pressure level. If you do not get rid of contaminants, air can put pressure on the lubricant, which will begin to squeeze out the seals. In order for the oil to be optimally distributed throughout the internal channels of the transmission, it is necessary to start power unit and warm it up.

The procedure for replacing fluid in an old-style VAZ 2114 box

The procedure for changing the oil in old and new type gearboxes is the same.

The only difference is that the filler hole is in a different location. It is located not at the top of the engine compartment, but at the bottom, above the drain plug. Therefore, it is necessary to refill the lubricant into the transmission until it comes out of the hole. The filling procedure is carried out using a hose, one end of which is installed in the gearbox. And on the other you put a funnel or syringe.

Transmission lubricant is not changed as often as motor lubricant. However, sooner or later this moment comes. Of course, the VAZ 2114 is an unpretentious car, but this does not mean that you can pour any oil into the box in order to save money.

If the car is serviced at a dealership service station, the question is: “what kind of oil should I put in the box?” you don’t care, the service is responsible for the work performed and the quality of consumables.

True, there is no reason to take warranty car There is not much access to the officials, so most owners carry out the maintenance themselves. Let's figure out how to choose the right one transmission fluid so as not to damage the gearbox and not overpay extra money.

Transmission oil for VAZ 2114

It would seem that the so-called “standard Zhiguli” oil for manual box gears are equally suitable for both the VAZ 2114 and any other LADA. However, each model of front-wheel drive VAZs has its own characteristics.

Quite often, owners fill the VAZ 2114 gearbox with fluid, following the advice of “experienced” neighbors in a garage cooperative. The reasoning is as follows: “I’ve been pouring this oil for 10 years now, and the box is like new.”

This approach does not stand up to criticism: despite the affordability of the car, the gearbox is a complex device. Deviations from the standards established by the manufacturer will lead to accelerated wear and, in some cases, failure of the manual transmission.

Testing transmission oils on a friction machine - video

You can pour oil into the VAZ box yourself; the procedure is simple. According to the instructions, the replacement interval is 60 thousand km. The oil volume in the 2114 box is from 3 to 3.5 liters (the exact value is 3.3 - if you pour liquid into new box without lubricant residues in cavities and on parts).

When choosing transmission oil on the VAZ 2114 the following operating conditions are taken into account:

  • traffic intensity;
  • average load on the vehicle (number of passengers, cargo weight);
  • average temperature in the operating region;
  • types of roads: plain, mountainous areas.

In addition, diagnostics will help you choose which oil to pour into the VAZ 2114 gearbox. Based on the wear patterns of parts after the replacement interval, adjustments can be made. At a minimum, in the parameters of viscosity or temperature tolerances.

Of course, the car manufacturer will not indicate the name of the manufacturer of technical fluids in the specification. VAZ gearbox oil is produced under various brands; a reference to a specific name is nothing more than advertising.

AvtoVAZ recommends Lukoil TM 4-12, but this is just a recommendation, not a prescription. If the instructions give preference to a certain trademark, the rest can sue, and they will be right. Normal operation of the car depends only on the properties of the oil, and not on the logo on the packaging.

You can refer to the experience of VAZ 2114 owners. Judging by the reviews, the following brands are used:

  1. Lada Trans KP;
  2. Lukoil TM 4-12;
  3. New Trans KP;
  4. Nordix Supertrans RHS;
  5. Slavneft TM-4;
  6. Castrol 75w90;
  7. Shell Getribeoil EP 75w90;
  8. TNK 75w90.

The manufacturer is also not against the listed oils, at least these are the brands offered in official service centers, and no one worries about warranty claims.

The main indicator is the viscosity of the oil. For moderate climates, the value 80W90 is suitable - these are the parameters recommended by the car manufacturer. With such a transmission you can safely drive both in the summer heat and in mild frosts (down to -20°C).

This is a universal approach, just like for all-season tires on wheels. But for northern regions it is better to use the 75W90 formula. During severe frosts, you can start the car even with a dead battery. And heat over +30°C is unlikely in such an area.

When filling in new transmission lubricant, you must be aware that you will use the fluid for several years without changing the lubricant when switching from summer to winter operation. Therefore, the recommendations of the car plant are one thing, but actual operating conditions are completely different.

Another limitation of the plant is the API quality standard. Transmission fluid must be marked at least GL-4, or TM-4 according to Russian qualifications.

Synthetic or mineral water

There are no restrictions on the choice of base. From the point of view of characteristics, as well as operational properties, there seems to be no difference. However, using the example of the same motor oils, we know that stable properties are retained for a long time only by synthetic base, or oils created on the basis of semi-synthetics.

Mineral water works well at medium loads and in temperate climates. In extreme heat, the base quickly “burns out”, ceasing to be a reliable link for additives.

And operation at temperatures of -25°C and below is difficult due to the tendency to thicken in the cold. It is synthetic transmission oils that force you to start the car in winter with the clutch pedal depressed. Otherwise, you can quickly damage the starter.

Synthetics are devoid of these disadvantages, have a longer service life, but the cost is corresponding. VAZ owners often prefer cheaper oils and shorten their service life. The savings are negligible, but there is always fresh oil in the box.

As usual, the truth is in the middle. The best solution is a compromise semi-synthetic. The service life and wear resistance are almost like pure synthetics, and the price is close to mineral water. The same Lukoil TM 4 - 12SAE80W-85 is produced on a mixed basis.

And the price is reasonable, and the characteristics are normal. If you do not trust the domestic oil industry, purchase foreign analogues on the same basis. A little more expensive, and no negative emotions.

General principle for selecting transmission oils for manual transmissions - video

VAZ-2114 is a time-tested car, easy to operate and maintain. Problems with repairs of this car This will not arise even for inexperienced motorists, since there is a lot of text and video information on this car, presented on various forums on the Internet. And yet, many owners are tormented by the question of choosing the right transmission oil for the VAZ-2114. This question is now relevant, if only because today many manufacturers offer counterfeit products that can greatly harm the VAZ-2114 gearbox. This article shows the parameters and the most popular brands that you need to adhere to in order to choose a truly high-quality product.

Nuances of choice

According to the manufacturer, the oil in the VAZ-2114 gearbox is designed for almost the entire period of operation of the vehicle. In fact, it all depends on the operating conditions. As you know, road and climatic conditions in Russia are far from the best in the world. For this reason, unfortunately, VAZ-2114 owners will probably have to think about changing the oil earlier - this will be more reliable and safer for both the car and the owner of the car.

Of course, the manufacturer understands and acknowledges the difficult situation with roads and climate in Russia, and therefore has compiled a list of recommended brands for the production of oils, as well as suitable parameters for them.

So, before choosing a company, you first need to pay attention to the oil standards for the VAZ-2114 gearbox:

  • 75W-90 - this is what it means synthetic oil , used in all gearboxes modern cars AvtoVAZ. It is also suitable for the relatively outdated model 2114. Oil with this standard has good lubricating properties, ensures minimal noise levels in the box, and also reduces vibrations. Significantly better than any semi-synthetic oil. Complies with API-GL-4 class.
  • 8W-90 – semi-synthetic oil, corresponds to API-GL-4 class. It is considered a more affordable lubricant and is recommended for used cars.

Now let's name specific manufacturers of oils approved by AvtoVAZ specifically for the VAZ-2114:

  • Lada Trans KP
  • Lukoil TM 4-12
  • New Trans KP
  • Nordix SUPERTRANS RHS
  • Slavneft TM-4
  • Castrol 75w90
  • Shell Getribeoil EP 75W90
  • THK 75W90

Viscosity selection

As you know, there are three types of oils on the market - synthetic, semi-synthetic and mineral. Each of them has its own parameters, and the main one is viscosity. A certain viscosity is designed for specific ambient temperatures in which the vehicle is operated. Let's consider suitable viscosity standards for the VAZ-2114, preferable for a particular climatic region:

  • OW-20
  • 5W-30
  • 10W-30
  • 10W-40
  • 15W-40

The most viscous oil is considered to be mineral lubricant, which is suitable not only for the gearbox, but also for all technical components. It is recommended for use in machines with high mileage. As for semi-synthetic, this type of oil is considered one of the most popular, as it supports almost all climate zones, and is ideal for hot and cold temperatures. Semi-synthetics consists of mineral water and semi-synthetics. Semi-synthetics are the most economical and optimal option for owners of domestic cars. Synthetic is a more expensive and high-quality oil that has a high degree of fluidity, due to which it quickly penetrates into all engine components and lubricates them. This lubricant is more preferable for foreign cars.

Maybe some of the drivers have not yet remembered this rule, then we remind you that changing the oil in the car’s gearbox , must be done. Transmission lubricants have a complex chemical composition. Various additives are necessarily added to their composition, the purpose of which is to improve lubricating properties, extreme pressure, anti-foaming and others.

Gear and gear oil

TYPES OF TRANSMISSION LUBRICANTS

Transmission fluids and lubricants are made on different bases. They can be:

  • Lubricants made on a mineral basis;
  • Semi-synthetic lubricating fluids;
  • Synthetic based oils.

The manufacturer is required to indicate the type of lubricant on the label of the container that is sold. What kind of oil should be poured into the VAZ 2114 gearbox and other VAZ models with front-wheel drive will be discussed below, but for now a few words specifically about lubricants and their types:

  1. Mineral lubricants are produced directly from petroleum products;
  2. Synthetic oils are produced by organic synthesis;
  3. Semi-synthetic lubricants are obtained by mixing “mineral water” and “synthetic”.

As noted earlier, additives must be added to all types of lubricating fluids.

PARAMETERS OF OILS FOR TRANSMISSION

Specialists who repair and maintain cars, as well as manufacturers of lubricating fluids, consider its viscosity to be the main parameter of a transmission lubricant. Next in the characteristics is the composition of additives, which are designed to ensure a long service life of transmission parts.

The same experts claim that best characteristics have lubricants that are made entirely from a synthetic base. They are more resistant to oxidative processes, which means that they will have a longer service life. This property of the lubricant is especially important for units with heavy loads and high speeds.

This car, like the VAZ 2113 and VAZ 2115, has front-wheel drive. The design of the drive and transmission of such vehicles is the main factor when choosing a lubricant for these components. Owners of these machines also need to consider the following: important points when choosing transmission lubricants:

  • Operating conditions of the machine, time of year, weather conditions, outside temperature, other factors;
  • The design feature of the vehicle being used, the loads experienced by the vehicle, the duration of these loads;
  • Based on the first points, the optimal viscosity of the lubricant is determined;
  • The possibility of additives influencing various transmission components.

The question that has arisen about what kind of oil to pour into the VAZ 2114 gearbox can be answered in this way. It is recommended to fill the gearbox of VAZ 2114, VAZ 2113 and VAZ 2115 with GL 4 lubricant; in our country it is classified as TM 4. The vehicle manufacturer recommends using Lukoil TM 4 - 12SAE80W-85. It fits all the parameters except one. This oil is not an all-season oil. In extreme frosts it will thicken greatly. The normal temperature range of this lubricant is from +40 C to -26 C. Therefore, it is best to use “all-season” SAE 75W80 or SAE 75W90.

Lukoil TM 4

CHECKING THE LUBRICANT LEVEL IN TRANSMISSIONS

It has already been said about which oil to choose for the VAZ 2114 gearbox, now you need to remember how its level is checked in the boxes. This is one of the simplest maintenance operations, but it cannot be put off. It is much more profitable and easier to look and check the level about once a month than to then deal with expensive gearbox repairs. This operation can be performed in two ways, with and without a measuring probe. Let's look at them separately. With any testing method, it is necessary to let the car stand on a level surface for 15-20 minutes so that the lubricant flows into the crankcase pan of the box being tested.

To check the level with a dipstick:

  1. Open the hood and take out the gearbox dipstick. You should look for it under the air filter on the driver's side;
  2. Next, the driver needs to wipe the dipstick with a rag;
  3. Insert the dipstick back into place;
  4. Take out the dipstick a second time and inspect the traces of lubricant on it. If the trace left is below the max mark, it should be topped up.

Checking the level without a dipstick is carried out as follows:

  1. Place the car over an inspection hole or on a lift, remove the engine protection;
  2. The next step is to unscrew the transmission lube drain plug on the box;
  3. Place your finger in the hole to check where the level is. It should be on the bottom edge of the drain plug.

You can add lubricant to the level into the hole of the dipstick in any convenient way. For example, using a large-capacity medical syringe.

Device for adding oil to the gearbox

When you reach the desired level, everything is put in place, and you can hit the road.

ABOUT REPLACING THE LUBRICANT FLUID IN THE VAZ 2114 GEARBOX

The operating instructions for the car state that the oil in the VAZ 2114 gearbox is changed after 60 thousand kilometers. But, especially on new cars, Whenever you check the level, you should test the lubricant with your fingers to check for the presence of solid particles. These may be metal particles from the running-in parts of the gearbox. If suddenly they are noticed, then it needs to be changed.

Before changing the lubricant, you need to remember how much oil is in the gearbox. According to the recommendations of the instructions, 3.3 liters of lubricant are poured into the gearbox crankcase. It is sold in containers whose capacity can be 1.5 or 5 liters. Points have appeared at gas stations that sell this oil on tap. You need to be careful here.

There are known cases of counterfeit products being sold by such outlets. Saving a couple of hundred rubles can result in a box repair costing several thousand. It is better to fill the oil from well-known manufacturers who have been working in the fuel and lubricants market for a long time and have proven themselves well. Such a replacement is not made every day; you should not save on it.

We have found out how much oil to fill in the gearbox, now we can talk about how to change the oil in the gearbox. This procedure is simple, but requires certain skills and the availability of tools. It is advisable to carry out the replacement in a garage with an inspection hole or on a lift. If you have neither one nor the other, then a car jack with stands for the car will help out. To do this you need to prepare:

  1. Work clothes and gloves;
  2. Empty containers for draining the waste;
  3. 1.5 liter empty plastic bottle and a knife for cutting it;
  4. Key for unscrewing the drain plug. This will be easiest to do with a head at “17”;
  5. New transmission lubricant for replacement with a volume of at least 3.5 liters.

You also need to have rags, sawdust or other means nearby in case of a liquid spill.

It should also be recalled that draining any engine or transmission oil is carried out only on a hot engine.

This can be done after a trip or specifically drive about 10 kilometers to warm up the transmission fluid. Transmission lubricant is hot, so drain it with gloves to avoid getting your hands burned.

After the run, let the car sit for 10-15 minutes and you can start replacing. To get to the drain plug, you need to be under the car. Look closely at the engine protection. It should have a cutout for the drain plug. If it is not there, then you will have to remove the protection. Then do this:

  • Place an empty container for “working off” and unscrew the drain plug. At this moment, you need to be careful not to spill it on the floor and not to drench yourself in the “working off”.
  • While the “working off” is being drained, it is necessary to remove it for the convenience of further work. air filter and pull out the dipstick.
  • If the drain is finished, screw the drain plug back into place and wipe the area with a rag. This is necessary in order to see possible leaks after adding fresh oil.
  • Now you need an empty plastic bottle; it will serve as a kind of watering can. The bottom is carefully cut off with a knife and it is ready for use.
  • Now you need to place the bottle neck into the hole for the dipstick, you can fill it. We already know how much to fill, but you shouldn’t pour all the lubricant at once.
  • Fill in about 3 liters and carefully inspect the floor under the car. If no drops are found on the floor, add to the required level.

It is necessary to fill the oil slightly above the level. This is due to the fact that the fifth gear of VAZ 2113, 2114 and 2115 cars is located above all other gears and often experiences “oil starvation”.

I would also like to remind you that “synthetics” have high fluidity compared to other types of lubricants. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the condition of gearbox seals, especially for cars with high mileage.

After the replacement, some time passed, the oil flowed into the crankcase, which means it’s time to check its level. If everything is normal, you can safely hit the road.

A car transmission is a unit containing a large number of moving components and parts. It is for this reason that the oil poured into it must be of high quality and exactly meet the required parameters for fluidity, viscosity and other indicators. Today we will talk about which oil to choose for the VAZ 2114 gearbox and how to replace it correctly with your own hands.

Gearbox oil for VAZ 2114

Main characteristics of gear oil

When choosing oil for a VAZ 2114 gearbox, the driver should be guided by such important factors as:

  • climate and current weather conditions (this mainly relates to air temperature in the summer and winter seasons);
  • type of box (manual or automatic) and its maximum loads, especially when maximum speed engine;
  • required oil viscosity (which usually depends on the two factors above).

In addition, when choosing gear oil for the VAZ 2114, you should take into account the presence of additional additives and inhibitors in it, which can have a beneficial effect on the operation of the metal elements of the box.

The most suitable oil for the 14th model is GL4 type lubricant (according to the domestic classification - TM4). AvtoVAZ itself recommends the use of TM4-12 SAE80W-85 oil, since it has the most suitable fluidity and viscosity indicators for the conditions of the Russian climate. It should be taken into account that the specified brand of gear lubricant is not all-season, and at temperatures below -26 C, critical thickening may occur.

In order to avoid this (which is especially important for drivers living in the middle and northern regions of the country), it is recommended to use all-season oils such as SAE75W80 or SAE75W90. They have a bottom operating temperature down to -35 C and are perfect for working in winter in the vast majority of regions of Russia.

According to the advice of many experts, 10W40 motor oil can be a good alternative to all-season gear oil.

At the end of the conversation about making the right choice It is worth noting one extremely important thing when using oil - you should absolutely not fill the gearbox of a front-wheel drive car (which is the 14th) with high-viscosity oils, for example SAE85W-90.

Even with summer temperatures they will complicate the normal operation of the transmission, and at strong negative temperatures its gears will be subject to colossal overloads. The same rule applies to those poured as transmission motor oils, for example 10W50 oil.

Checking the oil level and changing the oil

Before we talk about replacement, let’s figure out how much oil is in the box of the VAZ 2114. According to the instructions supplied with the car, the total volume of oil in the transmission is 3.3 liters. This figure should be used as a guide when buying new oil and changing it (which, by the way, according to the same instructions, should be done after every 60,000 km).

It is not worth saving on changing transmission oil, since operating a car with old lubricant, as well as pouring low-quality oil into the gearbox, can cause damage to the gearbox. Thus, savings of a couple of hundred rubles can ultimately result in expensive repairs of the entire unit.

You can determine how much lubricant is inside the box at the moment using a special probe.

Transmission oil level dipstick

This is very easy to do; all you need is:

  1. Place the machine on a level surface (if it has been running for a long time, let it cool for about 20 minutes).
  2. Open the hood.
  3. Find the dipstick under the hood (it is located in the area fuel filter fine cleaning and air pump tubes).
  4. Pull out the dipstick, wipe its surface with a dry, clean cloth, and then put it back in place.
  5. Remove the dipstick again and use traces of oil to determine its level.
  6. If the level is below the Min mark, then new lubricant should be added.

Many experts in the field of operation and repair of transmissions advise constantly maintaining the oil level just above the maximum mark. This is due to the fact that part of the fifth gear sector is located above the maximum mark, and in order for it to work with minimal wear and does not emit a hum, the gear should be completely covered with oil.

In addition to monitoring the transmission level, checking its condition is also very important. To do this, at each measurement you should check the lubricant by touch. If solid particles or metal shavings are noticed in it, an urgent replacement will have to be made (regardless of how much time the machine has traveled since the previous replacement).

But before adding new oil, the internal cavity of the gearbox should be thoroughly washed. In order to do this, you need to drain the old lubricant, then pour a 3-liter cleaning mixture inside the gearbox, which is prepared from gear oil and kerosene in a 1:1 ratio. After pouring this mixture, you will need to start the car, put it in first gear and drive in this state for at least 5 minutes.

After this, you need to let the machine cool, and when it cools down, unscrew the drain plug and drain the cleaning mixture from the box (in this case, the drain hole must be kept open for at least half an hour in order to allow all the remaining mixture to drain out).

If the lubricant in the transmission does not contain foreign components, but its service life has already expired, it is enough to simply replace it.

In this case, changing the oil in the VAZ 2114 gearbox is performed as follows:

  1. Start the car and drive it for a drive, during which you engage each of the gears and let it run for a while. This will help warm up the box and thin the oil, giving it maximum fluidity.
  2. Place the machine over the pit and place a container under the front to collect the oil.
  3. Open the hood.
  4. Remove the crankcase protection.
  5. Remove the cap from the breather.
  6. Clean the breather and its cap from dirt.
  7. Remove the dipstick.
  8. Unscrew the drain plug and wait until old grease will drain completely.
  9. Screw in the drain plug.
  10. Using a large syringe or bulb, pour the required amount of new lubricant into the dipstick mounting hole.
  11. Reinstall the dipstick.
  12. Place the cap on the breather.

Adding oil to the VAZ 2114 gearbox

Thus, self-replacement oiling is a very simple operation that anyone can do. The only thing to remember is the need to check the level some time after the replacement and, if it is low, add the missing amount of oil.
