To solve this problem, you should first find out which larger wheels can be installed on the VAZ 2109, because today there is a very large assortment of models on the market with sizes R14 - R15.

If such a rim is installed on a car, will it be preserved? technical specifications? Is it possible to pass inspection on such wheels?

R14 wheels can be mounted on the following models:

  • 2109,
  • 2108,
  • 21099,
  • 2114,

On all vehicles, the wheel width should not exceed 6 inches. In this case, the offset should be within 35-40 millimeters.

It is allowed to install cast products, as well as forged structures, with the above parameters. The center hole of the discs must be greater than or equal to 58.5 millimeters.

For such models, you will have to specially select tires so that after installation there is no change in the diameter of the wheel. Otherwise, when the car starts to turn, the tire may touch suspension parts, possibly touching the fender liners.

Experts advise installing tires with the following dimensions on R14 wheels:

  • 175/65 R14,
  • 185/60 R14.

The final option is considered more preferable.

Diameter calculation

In principle, each driver can calculate the wheel diameter independently. To do this, he must be well able to decipher the existing tire markings, for example, let’s calculate a wheel with dimensions 175/70 R13 for a nine:

  • 175 – tire width indicator (mm).
  • 70 – tread height size. Takes a percentage of the existing width. In this example: 175x0.7 = 122.5 mm.
  • R13 – disk diameter. Calculated: 13 x 25.4 = 330 millimeters.

To obtain the wheel diameter, it is necessary to add the disk diameter with the profile height multiplied by two:

330 + 122.5 x 2 = 575 mm.

If you carry out calculations for other wheels, you get:

  • 175/65 R14 – 583,
  • 185/60 R14 – 577 mm.

The last option is considered the most optimal. The tire is ten millimeters wider. The contact patch of such rubber is much larger, which means the braking distance will be reduced.

The car will be more stable and much easier to drive. The rubber will not break when turning at high speed.

However, with all the positive aspects, there are also several disadvantages. A wide tire has a hydroplaning effect when driving at high speed. There is no such effect on narrow tires.

The cabin will feel shocks from hitting potholes due to the low profile height. Recommended disk dimensions must be indicated in technical documentation car.

Large disc elements

Discs with large size(15 inches) can be installed on Samara. However, the manufacturer does not recommend doing this, so problems may occur during technical inspection.

The 185/55 R15 tire fits these wheels. Of course, you can try to install 195/50 R15. Before installation, be sure to take all measurements. It is possible that the wheel will begin to “rub”, since the width of the tires is too wide.

VAZ 2109 is a 5-door front-wheel drive hatchback produced at the Volzhsky Automobile Plant. In comparison with the “related” VAZ-2108, the model was positioned as more “solid” and intended for a family man, since it was endowed with a less expressive appearance and 5 doors. Due to the characteristic contours of the body, the car was often called a “chisel”.

“Nine” represents class B. The main competitors of the model include Skoda cars Felicia and Renault 19. The Russian car was inferior to its classmates in reliability, but was much more affordable.

The peak of popularity of the VAZ 2109 occurred in the 90s. Then production of the model opened in Belgium and Finland. However, the production of the “nine” soon ceased in these countries. In 2004, the model was discontinued at the Volzhsky Automobile Plant. Until 2011, the VAZ 2109 was produced in Ukraine.

Sales of the “nine” started in 1987. Externally, the model was almost completely identical to the VAZ-2108, differing from it only in the number of doors. The car retains the same styling: angular body features, a relatively slight slope of the windshield, a large protruding bumper and noticeable rectangular headlights. Despite their similar design and dimensions, the “nine” and “eight” were fundamentally different cars. The width of the front doors in the VAZ-2109 was reduced by almost 250 mm. In the appearance of the model, one could guess the swiftness of the lines, but the sportiness became much less.

The interior of the “nine” turned out to be extremely practical. At the same time, the developers managed to increase comfort indicators. The car now has a “low” instrument panel, which has become more convenient. The front seats received headrests, and the upper belt attachment points were height-adjustable. Upholstery with inserts and optional fabric seats added to the model's prestige. The folded rear seats made the VAZ-2109 look like a station wagon. The cabin had ventilation and heating systems.

The first modernization of the car took place in 1989. The front part of the body has been slightly refined. The entire restyling consisted of a transition to “long” front wings, replacing the “short” version. In 1990, the model received a new 1.5-liter engine (72 hp). The modernized version was called VAZ-21093. It was this modification that became the most popular. By the mid-1990s from the line power units 1.1- and 1.3-liter engines were excluded. The engines were combined with 5-speed gearboxes.

The next restyling of the model took place in 1995. They stopped melting the radiator grille. The last cosmetic improvement of the VAZ-2109 happened in 1997. The car has not changed again.

Wheel and tire sizes

Regardless of the modification, the “nine” could be equipped with the following types of tires and wheels:

  • wheels 5J on 13 ET40 (5 – width in inches, 13 – diameter in inches, 40 – positive offset in mm), tires – 165/70R13 (165 – tire width in mm, 70 – profile height in%, 13 – rim diameter in inches);
  • 4.5J wheels on 13 ET40, tires – 155/80R13;
  • 5.5J wheels on 13 ET40, tires – 175/70R13;
  • 5J wheels on 14 ET40, tires – 175/65R14;
  • 5.5J wheels on 14 ET37, tires – 185/60R14;
  • 6J wheels on 14 ET35, tires – 185/60R14.

Other characteristics of VAZ-2109 wheels:

  • PCD (drilling) – 4 by 98 (4 is the number of holes, 98 is the diameter of the circle on which they are located in mm);
  • fasteners – M12 by 1.25 (12 – stud diameter in mm, 1.25 – thread size);
  • diameter central hole– 58.5 mm;
  • tire pressure – 1.9-2 bar.

Is it possible to install R14 (or even larger) wheels on a VAZ-2109? How will this affect the behavior of the car and will there be any problems with the traffic police?

Wheels with bore diameter 14-inch tires can be installed on VAZ Samaras. But at the same time, other wheel dimensions (width and offset) should not exceed certain values, otherwise, when turning and when the vehicle is maximally loaded, the wheels will touch the wheel arches and suspension elements. The bottleneck of the VAZ-2108, -09, -099 is the rear arches and suspension, which often “conflict” with oversized wheels.

For Samar, stamped steel wheels with a width of 5 or 5.5 inches with an offset (ET parameter) of 38 - 40 mm are suitable. Light alloy wheels can also be installed. In this case, the disk width should be 6 inches, and the ET should be 33 or 35 mm. In this case, a tire with a size of 175/65 R14 is used - for example, the same as in the factory equipment of a VAZ-2110 or Skoda Fabia. It is possible to use tires with a width of 165 and 185 mm.

In addition, installation of 15-inch wheels on “nines” and “eights” is allowed - provided that wheels with an ET of 30 - 35 mm are used and with sufficiently low-profile tires 185/55 R15. They also drive V8s with 195/50 R15 wheels. But even more “cool” tires 195/55 R15 and 205/50 R15 are installed only on the front axle or simultaneously with modifications to the suspension or wheel arches.

Based on the operating experience of “re-shod” Samaras, we can say that the recommended tire size for R15 rims is 195/50, and for R14 - 185/60.

Let us also recall that for any VAZ wheels, the diameter of the circle where the four mounting bolts are located (PSD) is 98 mm, which is coded in catalogs as 4x98. The diameter of the central hole in the disks for Togliatti cars should not be less than 58.5 mm.

Installation low profile tires allows you to improve vehicle handling when maneuvering and increase cornering speed. Low tire beads crumple less under lateral loads on the tire, and the steering becomes “sharper” and the car deviates less from the trajectory. In general, the concept of “bolt pattern” implies the distance from the center of one disk mounting hole to another. For the most part, this parameter is the same for all products of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant, but in general no standard values ​​have been developed. That’s why the holes for the bolts on the hubs are located differently among different manufacturers.

If you purchase discs with a lower ET value, the grip on the road surface will increase significantly, which means:

  • controllability will deteriorate;
  • fuel consumption will increase;
  • wheel bearing wear will accelerate.

Is it possible to install 4x100 disks?


This option can be seen quite often on the VAZ-2109. However, in reality this solution is not correct.

The problem is that standard bolt pattern The model in question differs relatively little from the factory one. It seems to many that these couple of millimeters do not matter. However, it is impossible to secure a 4×100 disk properly with ordinary bolts. There is a thickening on them (under the head) - it is this that does not allow the fasteners to be screwed in completely. Moreover, if you try to do this by force, most likely you will break the thread in the hub.
