In the 60s of the last century, several brands of cars were produced in the USSR. "Zaporozhets", "Volga" and "Muscovites" will forever remain in the memory of the citizens of our country as nostalgia for those distant times. But at that time there were not enough cars. To meet the growing demand for four-wheeled vehicles, the decision was made by the country's leadership to build a new car factory. As planned, he was supposed to take the main place in the production of passenger cars. It is from this moment that the history of AvtoVAZ begins. Its construction took place very quickly (2 times faster than planned). The equipment for technological cycles was created not only at the factories of the USSR, but also at a number of other socialist states, as well as the countries of the USA and Europe.

Plant creation

It was decided to build the Volga Automobile Plant in the city of Tolyatti. To do this, the country's leadership concluded in August 1966 an agreement with the Italian concern Fiat, which helped in the construction of the auto giant. They not only had to build a huge full-cycle production facility, bring in the appropriate equipment, but also train the staff.

The history of AvtoVAZ in Togliatti, even at the stage of creation, knew a small incident. The fact is that the emblem for the new brand of cars was invented by Soviet artists. The idea of ​​the sketch belonged to one of the capital's leaders A. Dekalenkov. But the Italians were supposed to make these logos. "Fiat" created the first thirty emblems with an error. In the name of the city "Togliatti" the letter "I" ended up as the letter "R". The marriage was quickly replaced.

The name of the plant was not chosen by analogy with other Soviet productions, which were called, for example, Ulyanovsk or Gorky. This was done for reasons of political correctness. Otherwise, "inappropriate jokes would not have been avoided."

Beginning of work

Even before the completion of the construction of the plant, personnel training began. Thanks to the tireless work of the workers, in 1970 the first 6 "kopecks" were produced - the famous Zhiguli car - VAZ-2101.

The demand for cars was such that sales were limited only by the possibilities of production. During the first year, they were produced in the amount of 100 thousand pieces.

In 1973, VAZ-2101 began to be supplied to the world market. However, this brand had to be renamed Lada. The name "Zhiguli" in French sounded like "Gigolo" (a man dancing for money).

Over time, the Lada brand began to be produced for the domestic consumer. "Zhiguli" stopped producing.

Increasing production turnover

In 1980, the Olympics were held in the USSR and were put on the Pyaterka conveyor (VAZ-2105). However, although these models were in enviable demand, the “six” (VAZ-2106) became the most popular in the entire history of the plant. It was put into mass production in 1976.

The production capacity of AvtoVAZ was provided by five plants. From 1966 to 1991, it included the Belebeevsky plant "Avtonormal", Skopinsky and Dmitrovgrad auto-aggregate plants, TPP VAZ and AvtoVAZagregat.

"Kopeyka" and "Troika"

Remembering everything (in the entire history of the existence of the auto giant), one cannot but pay tribute to its first offspring. These were VAZ-2101 and VAZ-2103. The first in the last two digits of the model number was popularly nicknamed "Penny". The second car began to be called the "troika".

"Kopeyka" was a sedan model adapted to the conditions of Soviet roads. The clearance of the domestic car was increased from 110 to 175 mm. Also, the developers have strengthened the brakes and suspension. This car was a symbol of the Soviet era of cars in the 70s. "Kopeyka" became the ancestor of rear-wheel drive sedans and universal "classic" models.

A short time after the first Kopeyka rolled off the assembly line, the Troika was put into mass production. At that time, it was called the "luxury" model. It was a thoroughly redesigned "penny". Particular attention was paid to had four headlights, chrome elements and an improved dashboard.

Further model enhancements

After the first two released, the history of AvtoVAZ includes several more popular modifications of the Kopeyka. After its serious restyling, VAZ-2104, 2105, 2106 and 2107 were put on the conveyor. The most popular among them was the Six. It was the prototype of the Fiat 124 Speciale. For more than 30 years of production of this model, 4.3 million VAZ-2106 have been sold.

The other three car brands also sold well. The designers developed rectangular headlights that were fashionable at that time. The salon has also been seriously redesigned. The engine of the car was also upgraded. "Six" and today is considered a fairly popular car.

Models of the 80s

The history of JSC "AvtoVAZ" in the 80s of the last century tells about a new stage of production. At this time, a completely new generation of Sputnik vehicles was developed. For the corresponding index in the room, as with previous models, the people dubbed the car the "eight". It was characterized by a wedge-shaped front end. For this, the VAZ-2108 was also called the "chisel".

The model had a new engine, gearbox. She had front wheel drive. The shape of the car had more aerodynamics than previous cars. The body had a power structure. The auto giant developed this model together with Porsche. The Germans helped the domestic manufacturer in creating everything except design.

After some time, the VAZ-2108 with a five-door hatchback and sedan went on sale.

At the end of the 80s, the small Oka was developed. Its prototype was the Daihatsu Cuore of the 1980 model. Subsequently, in addition to AvtoVAZ, Oka was also produced by SeAZ and KaMAZ.

Plant after the collapse of the USSR

The collapse was hard on many large and small industries, including AvtoVAZ. The history of the plant shows that the automotive technology giant experienced a deep and protracted crisis at that time.

The fact is that in sad days for AvtoVAZ, the plant was faced with such a concept as “competition”. Up to this point, the Soviet consumer purchased cars that rolled off the assembly line very quickly. But now a flood of fashionable, albeit used, foreign-made cars has poured into the country.

In Soviet times, domestically produced passenger cars improved little. Therefore, compared with imported cars, they did not hold water. The plant was faced with the need to reduce production volumes. Over 25% of jobs have been cut. Even state support did not help. To equalize the demand for foreign and domestic cars, high customs duties were introduced. But that didn't help much.

Working in a Crisis

The history of AvtoVAZ tells about really hard days for the company. Insufficient demand for obsolete car models, the struggle for the right to own the enterprise did not contribute to overcoming the crisis.

Moreover, the crisis of the financial system further contributed to the deterioration of affairs. The state supported the dying production in every possible way. But the accumulated internal and external problems could not be solved only by these measures.

Cases of mass theft of products and components were recorded. These were huge sums even for such a large enterprise. In 2009, the decline in sales was a record and amounted to 39% compared to 2008.

Huge investments were required to save the country's largest automobile plant. Anti-crisis measures were developed. Having solved its internal and external problems, the enterprise could get back on its feet.

Way out of the crisis

AvtoVAZ survived a long deep crisis. The history of the plant has more than 15 years of decadent, unpromising production in conditions of insufficient demand. However, a way out was still found. In July 2009, an agreement was reached between Russian Technologies and Renault-Nissan. It was decided to increase the authorized fund of AvtoVAZ. Renault-Nissan invested 240 million euros in it (this amounted to 25% of all shares) and three times the amount of Rostekhnologiya (while increasing its share in the authorized capital by 44%). Troika Dialog was losing 17.5% of its share.

In addition, it was decided to give the position of chief designer to Steve Mattin, who previously held a similar position in such global companies as Mercedes and Volvo. A period of gradual revival began.

AvtoVAZ, whose history of creation and work knew many ups and downs, during the crisis is characterized by a slight update of models. So, in the early 90s of the last century, the VAZ-2110 became one of the few new models. It was a sedan developed on the basis of the G8. This car had a rather original body, as well as interior design.

After him, for about 10 years, production did not know significant updates. The crisis that befell the previously prosperous plant affected all areas of its activity. Only in 2003, on the basis of the GM-AvtoVAZ joint venture, the Chevrolet Niva was put into mass production. A year later, the production of sedans, hatchbacks and station wagons of the Kalina type was launched in Togliatti.

2007 is marked by the release of a new model of the auto giant Lada Priora. To stimulate consumer demand in 2011, Kalina was replaced by its cheaper version of Grant. In 2012, a modified version was put into production. Renault Logan universal type Lada Largus.

AvtoVAZ Museum

The entire history from the first day of the plant's operation to the present is kept within the walls of the famous museum. The first "cherry" penny, sold through the company's branded network, is now on display here. It was operated by its owner for about 19 years. He gave it to the museum in 2000, for which he received as a gift a new car, which had just begun to go on sale.

A brief history of AvtoVAZ would be incomplete without some interesting facts. For example, the Niva (or VAZ-2121) was the only domestic car ever sold in Japan.

The city in which the car plant was built was previously called Stavropol. But in 1964 it was renamed in honor of P. Togliatti, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Italy. He died during a visit to the Artek children's camp during negotiations on a future co-production.

The chief designer of the Niva, P. M. Prusov, says that this name was given to the car by the first letters of the name of his daughters (Nina and Irina), as well as the sons of the first chief designer of production (Vadim and Andrey).

Having survived a deep crisis, the concern is gradually getting back on its feet. The history of AvtoVAZ deserves respect. LADA is a brand owned by JSC AVTOVAZ, the largest Russian manufacturer cars. Now the company is owned by the Renault-Nissan alliance and produces cars under the brands LADA, Renault, Nissan and Datsun. The main production and headquarters are located in the city of Togliatti.

The Togliatti manufacturer was born in 1966, when the leadership of the USSR decided to build a large automobile plant, which was supposed to produce affordable cars for personal use. Then in the Soviet Union there were only expensive cars in very limited quantities, which did not satisfy the demand from the population.

Before the start of construction, an agreement was signed with the Italian automobile concern Fiat, which developed a technical project, supplied equipment and technical documentation, and trained specialists. Many AVTOVAZ models were built on the basis of Fiat cars.

The construction of the plant started at the beginning of 1967 and was announced as a shock Komsomol construction site. It was carried out at an accelerated pace, equipment was supplied by 844 machine-building plants of the Soviet Union and more than 900 plants from other countries.

In 1970, the plant produced the first cars - Zhiguli VAZ-2101, which repeated the design of the Fiat-124. However, the Soviet car was assembled from domestic components and, according to its designers, had more than 800 differences with the Italian counterpart. She received drum brakes instead of discs, increased ground clearance, reinforced bodywork and suspension. All this made the VAZ-2101 more suitable for operation in the conditions of roads and temperatures of the Soviet republics.

The car was equipped with a carburetor gasoline engine with a more advanced overhead camshaft design. It was presented in two versions: 64- and 69-strong. The volume of the first was 1198 cm3, and the second - 1294 cm3. The maximum speed, respectively, was 142 and 148 km / h, and the acceleration time from start to 100 km / h was 20 and 18 seconds.

The model required improvements, which were carried out by engineers as complaints were received. Therefore, she could no longer claim the role of a cheap "people's car". However, this did not prevent her from becoming popular in the USSR, where there was an acute shortage of vehicles.

VAZ-2101, nicknamed "penny", became the ancestor of the "Classic" family and was produced until 1988. During this time, 4.85 million VAZ-2101 units with a sedan body of all modifications were produced. For the release of this car, the Volga Automobile Plant received the international award "Golden Mercury".

VAZ-2101 (1970-1988)

In March 1971, the first stage of the Volga Automobile Plant was put into operation, designed to produce 220,000 units annually. Already on July 16 of the same year, the 100,000th car rolled off the assembly line.

In 1972, the second model of AvtoVAZ, the VAZ-2102, was released. In fact, it was a copy of the "penny", converted into a rear-wheel drive station wagon. She was called "the best friend of the summer resident" because of the practicality and spaciousness.


VAZ-2102 (1972-1985)

In the same year, the production of a more powerful Zhiguli modification began - the VAZ-2103 model, which was named LADA 1500 for export. It was already equipped with a 1.5-liter engine with 77 hp. The maximum speed has increased to 152 km / h. The new model gained "hundred" in 16 seconds, which put it on the same level with Western competitors in the same class. In fact, the car was copied from the Italian Fiat 124 Speciale of 1968 with processing for use on the roads of the USSR.

The car also received a more comfortable, spacious and beautiful interior, a trunk trimmed with plastic and improved sound insulation. It was produced for 12 years, during which the plant produced 1,304,899 units of the model.



VAZ-2103 (1972-1984)

In 1976, the most popular model of the Togliatti automobile plant, the VAZ-2106, was released, the prototype of which was Italian Fiat 124 Speciale 1972. The car replaced the VAZ-2103, and none of its creators expected such a wild success with the public.

VAZ-2106 was equipped with a 1.6-liter engine with 75 hp, which allowed it to accelerate to 152 km/h.

In appearance, the “six” received a new front fascia, a rear trunk panel, other bumpers, side direction indicators, wheel covers, and ventilation grilles.

In the cabin, the upholstery and armrests of the doors have changed, and the front seats have height-adjustable headrests.

In addition, the car was equipped with a windshield washer switch under the steering wheel, an alarm, a low brake fluid level indicator and a dashboard lighting rheostat. More "advanced" versions received a radio, a red fog lamp and rear window heating.


VAZ-2106 (1975-2005)

In 1977, one of the most successful cars AvtoVAZ - "Niva", VAZ-2121. This all-wheel drive SUV with a 1.6-liter engine and a frame chassis was successfully exported: more than 50% of produced cars went abroad.

It was equipped with a mechanical four-speed gearbox, a lockable center differential and a two-stage transfer case.

On the world market, Niva became a real sensation, arousing a desire among the leaders of the automotive industry to create something similar. Success was ensured by innovative technical solutions (independent front suspension, all-metal load-bearing body) and a low price.

In 1978, Niva was recognized as the best car in its class at the international exhibition in Brno. In 1980, the model received a gold medal at the Poznań International Fair.

The Volga Automobile Plant decides to produce special versions of the VAZ-2121, the first of which are exported: a modification with a 1.3-liter engine and a right-hand drive version.

It is worth noting that in the homeland "Niva" was bought up not as intensively as abroad. It was quite expensive both to purchase and to operate. Wherein domestic consumers not always needed such a large car.

In 1979, the VAZ-2105 was released, which was produced by the automobile plant for the longest time - until 2010. Its development took place as part of the modernization and preparation program for the second generation of rear-wheel drive cars of the brand.

It became the successor to the “penny”, as well as the basis for the creation of the “luxury” VAZ-2107 sedan in 1981 and the VAZ-2104 station wagon in 1984.


VAZ-2105 (1979-2010)

In 1982, the last model from the representatives of the "classics", the VAZ-2107, appeared. It, in fact, is a "luxury" modification of the VAZ-2105, which was distinguished by a more powerful engine, different bumpers and headlights, a radiator grille, a new hood shape, more comfortable front seats, an updated dashboard and the presence of cold air deflectors.

In the early 80s, it became obvious that the future belongs to front-wheel drive cars. In addition, the car factory felt the need to change the design. As a result, in 1984, the production of the three-door Samara hatchback, VAZ-2108, began.

The car and its five-door modification "Sputnik", VAZ-2109, were distinguished by excellent dynamics and controllability, unpretentiousness to the quality of the road surface and high maximum speed.

VAZ-2108 was equipped with a four-cylinder four-stroke carburetor or injection engine with a volume of 1.1, 1.3 or 1.5 liters. This motor is specially designed for use in a front wheel drive vehicle.


VAZ-2108 (1984-2003)

VAZ-2109 was a "family" variation of the "eight", which was presented as a more solid car.

The front-wheel drive novelty, of course, became an event in the domestic automotive market, but it had a number of drawbacks. In particular, it was not as cheap and easy to repair as the “classic”, it received less comfortable pedals and an oil receiver and engine crankcase that quickly failed.

In 1990, the Togliatti automobile enterprise released a four-door version of the family with a sedan body - VAZ-21099. She became the last model that came out before the collapse of the USSR.

The first car produced in the post-Soviet period was the "ten" - VAZ-2110. It was developed back in 1989, but the crisis years did not allow production to begin in 1992, as previously planned.

VAZ-2110 began to be produced only in 1995. It was equipped with one of two engine options: an 8-valve 1.5-liter 79 hp. or 16-valve 1.6-liter, developing 92 hp. The car belonged to the highest class in the Samara family, which could compete with Opel Astra, Audi 80 and Daewoo Nexia.

Over time, many modifications of the model came out, among which were cars with a station wagon, hatchback and coupe. Until the advent of LADA Priora, the "ten" was considered the most expensive and prestigious domestic car.




VAZ-2110 (1995-2007)

The successor to the VAZ-21099, the four-door sedan VAZ-2115, appears in 2007. The novelty received a spoiler with an additional brake light on the trunk, body-colored bumpers flowed around the thresholds, new taillights, door moldings and a more comfortable interior.

At first, the model was equipped with 1.5- and 1.6-liter carburetor engines, since 2000 - a power unit with distributed fuel injection.

In 1998, the first Russian minivans appeared - the VAZ-2120. The model was based on an extended platform, borrowed from the Niva, and equipped with an all-wheel drive chassis, which helped to overcome the most difficult road conditions.

The car was produced in small batches until 2008, when production was stopped due to low demand and poor quality.


VAZ-2120 (1998-2008)

In 1993, the development of a new car called Lada Kalina began. The design went on for quite a long time, in 1999 the first prototype debuted in a hatchback body, a year later - a sedan, and in 2001 - a station wagon.

The first generation of the model was produced from November 18, 2004. Since July 2007, LADA Kalina has received a new 1.4-liter 16-valve engine, and since September, an ABS system.

The model has been constantly updated. So, in 2010, a version appeared with a black “basalt” interior and a standard audio system.

On May 1, 2011, AVTOVAZ announced the cessation of production of the LADA Kalina sedan, which was replaced by the budget LADA Granta.


LADA Kalina (2004)

In 2008, the Renault-Nissan Corporation bought out a 25% stake in JSC AVTOVAZ. The next year, the company met with a lump of financial problems that caused a reduction in production by almost half.

The car company needed state support, and it allocated 25 billion rubles as an interest-free loan, and also brought the entire AVTOVAZ model range into state program subsidizing car loan rates.

In September, there were mass layoffs at the enterprise, and the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation stated that the car plant was in a pre-bankruptcy state, and therefore state support was inappropriate. It was proposed to cut about 50,000 employees.

In November, Renault put forward a proposal to organize the production of cars of the LADA, Renault and Nissan brands based on the B0 platform at the Volga Automobile Plant. The help of the French contributed to the fact that the company received additional funding from the government. This helped to overcome the financial crisis and even turn a profit in 2010.

On December 12, 2012, the creation of a joint venture between the Renault-Nissan alliance and the Russian Technologies State Corporation was announced. By the end of 2013, the new joint venture owned 76.25% of the shares of JSC AVTOVAZ.

On June 18, 2014, Renault-Nissan increased its stake in AVTOVAZ to 67.13%.

In the current LADA portfolio, the Priora model with a sedan body appeared in 2007. The following year, a hatchback car came out, and in 2009, a station wagon. The car is equipped with an 8-valve engine with 81 hp. or 16-valve 98 hp

It is the successor to the VAZ-2110, representing its restyled version. In appearance, the front and rear fenders, trunk lid and hood, bumpers, lighting equipment with fog lights, alloy wheels, and radiator lining have changed.

The interior was developed jointly with the Italian studio Carcerano. There was a new front panel, a silver console pad, a new armrest with two niches, better upholstery, a driver's airbag, and improved sound insulation.


LADA Priora (2007)

On May 16, 2011 serial production of LADA Granta started. This car was developed on the basis of the Kalina model. In March 2013, a modification with a liftback body appeared, which, among other things, differed in the shape of the rear side doors, the front bumper and the location of the rear license plate.

The model is equipped with a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with distributive injection and three power options - 87, 98 and 106 hp.

As soon as the car went on sale, it caused a rush of demand from buyers. The queues for the novelty stretched until March 2012.

LADA Granta became the first car of the Togliatti automobile plant, on which an automatic transmission was installed in series - a four-range transmission of the Japanese company Jatco.

In 2012, LADA Largus appeared, developed jointly with Renault on the Logan platform. The car is produced in station wagon, high-capacity station wagon and cargo van versions. In this case, the passenger version can be five- or seven-seater.

Now the LADA model range includes five families of cars: Largus station wagon, Granta sedan and liftback, sedan, hatchback and wagon Priora, hatchback and station wagon Kalina, as well as three- and five-door 4x4 models. Separately, it is worth noting the cross-versions of the popular station wagons Largus and Kalina, which replenished the model line of the brand at the junction of 2014-2015, as well as the 4x4 Urban adapted for the city. In 2014, the automaker held 17% Russian market passenger cars. Production, in addition to the Togliatti automobile plant, is organized in the Russian cities of Syzran, Izhevsk, Serpukhov and Naberezhnye Chelny, in Ukrainian - Lutsk, Kherson, Zaporozhye, Kremenchug, as well as in Ecuador, Egypt, Uruguay.

The history of the car, which is currently known as the VAZ-2110 (Lada 2110) began in 1983, it was then that the first sedan model appeared, strongly reminiscent of the Opel Ascona and Ford Record cars of that time. This car had rear drive and according to the plans it was supposed to be called VAZ-2112, but it did not receive approval for further development.

Development continued, at the beginning of 1984 another unsuccessful layout was built, which was also abandoned. Things got off the ground only when the development of a new sedan of the Samara family with the VAZ-21099 index began. The first prototype, released at the end of 1984, already wore the factory index VAZ-2110. It was a prototype of the so-called "series 0", in its manufacture almost all the details were taken from the cars of the first Samara family ( / /). The prototype VAZ-2110 "zero series" strongly resembled the VAZ-21099, its design provided only one left rear-view mirror and a single wiper.

A year after the next improvements and changes in the design, the so-called 100th series of the VAZ-2110 car was born, which was called the Bottlenose Dolphin. The hundredth series was followed by the next and the next in increments of one hundred, the larger the series was marked, the more it looked like a production car. With each new series, the car looked less and less like the original rear-wheel drive project, for example, in the 300 series project, it was already easy to recognize the “top ten” that went into mass production. It is worth noting that the aerodynamic fine-tuning of the 300 series was carried out with the participation of Porsche.

A prototype, which was almost ready for serial production, was shown in 1992 to Russian President Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin during his visit to the Volga Automobile Plant. This copy was recommended for mass production, however, due to the economic crisis, mass production was postponed, and only in June 1995 the first pilot batch of VAZ-2110 cars was produced, and full-fledged mass production was deployed only in the next 1996.

The serial car VAZ-2110 for its time (in the mid-90s at the time it was released) had a modern design, both exterior and interior, and a spacious trunk with a volume of 480 liters. Throughout the entire production period, the appearance of the car practically did not change, and in this form it was produced in Russia until 2007, after which the car completely replaced new sedan Lada Priora.

The VAZ-2110 sedan was produced not only in Russia, but also in Egypt and Ukraine by the Bogdan corporation. The Ukrainian "ten" bore its own name "Bogdan" and was produced until 2014. During the production of the VAZ-2110, it had many modifications, these were models with both a carburetor and an injection engine, both 8 and 16-valve, both 4 and 2-door coupe and even sports modifications.

Design and construction

New developments were incorporated into the cars of the 10th family, compared with previous models. So the parts that were most exposed to corrosion began to be made of galvanized metal, gas stops were used to hold the hood in the open position. There was an on-board control system, an immobilizer, a gasoline vapor recovery system. Brake discs are ventilated. Part of the production cars were equipped with air conditioning.

The first production cars VAZ-2110 received a carbureted 8-valve VAZ-21083 engine with a volume of 1.5 liters and a power of 69 Horse power. The exterior of the car was not as angular as the cars of the Samara family (which were nicknamed the “chisel” for a reason), the body lines were smoother and more modern. The car received a completely different optics, taillights, a different grille, completely different bumpers (both front and rear). The Zhiguli of the 1960s-1980s are officially called "classics", and this is perhaps the only case in the automotive industry when the generally accepted meaning of the word has become limited and does not require clarification of which cars are in question.

Compared to most car manufacturers, the Volga Automobile Plant (VAZ) is a relatively young enterprise. Its construction began in 1967 and proceeded at an incredible pace, even by Soviet standards. Since a decision had already been made on cooperation with Fiat (the first Zhiguli model was made on the basis of the Fiat-124), the construction proceeded according to the technical design of the Italians, and a contract was signed with them for the supply of basic technological equipment and further training of specialists. Zhiguli were conceived as a people's car, which, at a relatively low price, could cut the incredible queues of Soviet citizens who wanted to have their own transport.

The first six VAZ-2101 Zhiguli cars were produced on April 19, 1970. Mass production of "Kopecks" began in August, and by the end of the year, 21,530 "Ones" were produced. In the first models, the power of the four-cylinder engine with a volume of 1198 cm³ was 60 hp, the maximum speed was 140 km / h. Objectively, the VAZ-2101 surpassed the rest of the Soviet production cars of the turn of the sixties and seventies in terms of technical level and quality, especially in interior trim, but in terms of durability and maintainability, it was inferior to them. VAZ-2101 was produced until 1982.

In 1972, the second model of the Volga Automobile Plant, the VAZ-2102, was released - a five-door station wagon, produced until 1985. The popularity and fame of the “best friend of summer residents” eventually passed to the VAZ-2102 receiver in the face of the fourth VAZ model.

In the same year, the production of "Treshka" - VAZ-2103 (Lada 1500 in the export version) began. Its base 72-horsepower engine made it possible to reach a speed of 100 km / h in 17 seconds, making the model the most dynamic of the mass-produced Soviet cars of those years and comparable in dynamics to Western counterparts. For 12 years, 1,304,899 cars of the "third" model were produced. It is worth noting a very interesting modification, which, however, was not accepted - the VAZ-2103 Porsche. Proposed in 1976 by Porsche version of the VAZ-2103 without all the chrome parts. For a long time, the VAZ-2103 was deservedly considered a comfortable, reliable and dynamic car, and some connoisseurs of the brand consider it the most elegant and stylish VAZ model in general.

The very first VAZ-2106 car was assembled in December 1975, and the mass production of new items began on the third line of the conveyor from February 21, 1976. On December 28 of the same year, a copy of this model became the three millionth car produced by the Volga Automobile Plant, and on June 3, 1978 - four millionth. On May 17, 1979, one of the VAZ-2106s sent to Czechoslovakia became the millionth Soviet car delivered to the CMEA countries. No one could have imagined such super-popularity to an indistinguishable car that replaced the third model. A relatively powerful VAZ-2106 engine with a volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 75 hp. allowed to develop a maximum speed of up to 152 km / h. This model was produced until 2006. In total there were 7 serial modifications and 3 non-standard ones, one of which is the so-called "Half-sixth" - the only copy made by special order of someone from the Politburo after the demonstration of the experimental VAZ-2107 to the top leadership of the USSR in 1979.

Small-scale production of the VAZ-2105 began in October 1979, full-scale production was launched in January 1980 and lasted until December 30, 2010. The Pyaterka became the second generation of the Zhiguli, equipped with a 1.29-liter carburetor engine with a capacity of 63.6 hp. and 4-speed gearbox. About 14 modifications were produced, which differed from the basic version with different engines. Among them, one can single out the sports LADA 2105 VFTS (LADA-VFTS) - with a boosted engine of 1.6 liters, 160 hp. In March 1982, the Volga Automobile Plant began production of the VAZ-2107, which became the last model of the "classic". The seventh model was based on the VAZ-2105, but in a more luxurious and modern design. The 1.6-liter engine with a central fuel injection system made the Seven the fastest of the "classic" VAZ family (maximum speed 176 km / h). This car is also one of the best-selling in the post-Soviet market, thanks to its simplicity, reliability and, of course, low price. After the complete closure of LADA 2107 production in Russia on April 17, 2012, this model continues to be manufactured in Egypt by Lada-Egypt.

Serial production of the VAZ-2104 ("Four") was launched at the Volga Automobile Plant in the second half of 1984. The VAZ-2105 model was taken as the basis, which was distinguished by minimal production costs and maximum consumer effect. It also got a four-cylinder, four-stroke carbureted engine with a volume of 1198 cm3 with a power of 58 hp with a camshaft belt drive.The new model has a tailgate that opens up and a folding rear seat, which made it possible to increase the volume of the luggage compartment from 375 to 1340 liters.

It is the VAZ-2104 that completes the production of the "classic" line of the Volga Automobile Plant based on the Izhevsk production. The car can still be bought from dealers. The basic package, the cost of which starts from 200,000 rubles, now includes a gasoline injection engine with a working volume of 1600 cm³ and a power of 74.5 hp. equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox. VAZ-2104 is capable of reaching a maximum speed of up to 145 km/h and accelerating to 100 km/h in 17 seconds. Consumption of 92nd gasoline should be 7.5 liters per 100 km.

On July 20, 1966, after analyzing 54 different construction sites, the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Soviet government decided to build a new large automobile plant in the city of Togliatti. The preparation of the technical project was entrusted to the Italian automobile concern Fiat. According to the contract, the same concern was entrusted with the technological equipment of the plant and the training of specialists.

On January 3, 1967, the Central Committee of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League declared the construction of the Volga Automobile Plant an All-Union shock Komsomol construction site. Thousands of people, mostly young people, went to Tolyatti to build the auto giant. On December 22, 2006, AVTOVAZ signed a framework contract with the Canadian company Magna International on cooperation in the development of a new platform for Lada cars and the organization of a new car assembly plant in Togliatti. It was planned that the total cost of the project would be $1.6-1.7 billion; the final capacity of the plant will be 440 thousand vehicles per year. These plans for 2009 were not implemented.

In general, the design of the Fiat 124 has undergone more than 800 improvements, which in essence served as an adaptation of the VAZ 2101 to Soviet roads. So, the VAZ 2101 was distinguished by increased ground clearance, reinforced body and suspension, a hole for the engine factory handle, as well as drum brakes that ensured their longer-term operation. The rear suspension is now new - five-bar. The design of the synchronizers in the gearbox was improved, the clutch linings (by 18mm) received a larger outer diameter. The ground clearance in front has also increased (by 11mm). The drive axle has been completely modernized.
The design of the Fiat 124 engine was also changed. The VAZ 2101 engine was distinguished by a relocated camshaft (now it has become the top one), an increased distance between the cylinders (thanks to this change, the engine volume subsequently increased), as well as a cylinder diameter changed by 3 mm (increased), which made the engine short-stroke.

Some modernization of the design of the car was also made: a rear-view mirror was added from the outside, towing eyes, “fangs” on the bumpers, wide doors and a large trunk were installed. In the cabin, special recesses were made for door handles. In addition, the front seats now fold out.
After all the improvements, the weight of the VAZ 2101 was 945 kg, which was 90 kg more than the weight of the Fiat 124.
Also, on the basis of the VAZ 2101, all subsequent models of the "classic" family were created.
VAZ 2101 had several modifications. In particular, the VAZ 21011 model was equipped with a 1.3-liter engine, while its design was largely changed and its own engine was installed. The VAZ 21013 model was an analogue of the VAZ 21011, but was equipped with an engine from the VAZ 2101. The VAZ 21016 model, unlike the VAZ 21013, was equipped with a VAZ 21011 engine, but in design it was similar to the VAZ 2101. VAZ 21018 and VAZ 21019 cars were already equipped with rotary engines. Export models with a right-hand drive were also produced - VAZ 21012 (based on the VAZ 2101) and VAZ 21014 (based on the VAZ 21011).
By order of the police, a separate model was created - the VAZ 2101-94, made on the basis of the VAZ 2101 with a more powerful engine from the VAZ 2103.

VAZ 2102

VAZ 2102 is a licensed version of the Fiat 124 Familiare, with numerous differences similar to the base model VAZ-2101. The first car VAZ-2102 came off the assembly line of the Volga Automobile Plant in 1971. Then, after the start of production of the successor - the "Four" VAZ-2104 in 1984, both cars were produced simultaneously for another year until the removal of the "Two" from production in the summer of 1985.

The new model was largely unified with the base sedan VAZ-2101. The dashboard and driver's workplace are identical to those of the VAZ-2101. The edge of the tailgate is brought to the bumper and is flush with the floor, which simplifies loading and unloading operations. The solid rear seat folds down to create a horizontal cargo area. In 1978, the production of the VAZ-21021 modification with a four-cylinder 69-horsepower VAZ-21011 engine was launched. In the period from 1982 to 1984, along with the valve lever, the camshafts were nitrided for increased corrosion resistance, wear resistance and resistance to alternating loads. The problem of rapid wear of the camshafts was solved only with the transition to technology with whitening of the cams, which closed the topic of a terrible shortage of this part in the late 1970s - the first half of the 1980s. The difference between such camshafts is the hexagonal belt between the third and fourth cams.
Since 1983, for some of the manufactured VAZ-21023 cars, the electrical equipment of the front of the car was performed according to the scheme of the VAZ-21013 sedan. Taking into account the Western trend, since 1986, fuel tanks without drain plugs have been installed.

VAZ 2103

Fiat 124, which became the prototype of the VAZ-2101 and VAZ-2103 models, was first presented to the public in 1964. When signing the agreement on the project of the Volga Automobile Plant, it was agreed that Fiat would provide, along with the technical project of the plant, complete documentation for two cars (“norm” and “luxury”). Fiat offered ready-made solutions: as an author. No. 1 ("norm") - FIAT 124, and ed. No. 2 (“luxury”) - FIAT 125. But then FIAT 124 was taken as a prototype for both cars, since, at the request of the USSR, about 80 percent unification between both cars was needed. The cars were shown to the Soviet side and received approval - work began immediately on both projects.

In 1972, VAZ launched a more powerful version of the Zhiguli compared to the VAZ-2101, the VAZ-2103. Like all classic sedans, the VAZ-2103 model Zhiguli has the same disadvantages, such as: inconvenience of loading luggage due to the high rear panel, a small “glove box” without lighting, weak interior light, etc. From the point of view of modern ergonomics, the differences from the "penny" seem ridiculous. Leatherette seats with low backs were not even equipped with headrests, and the interior was never actually modernized, and by the end of production (1984) it was significantly outdated, more precisely, it became "unfashionable". VAZ 2104

This body design made it possible to place a long trunk on the roof, which was not recommended to be overloaded, since the calculated stiffness of the station wagon body is much lower than that of the sedan. The new model had a rear door that opened upwards, in addition, a completely new solution was used, rear window heating and a wiper, which later became standard equipment, since until 1994 only export versions and the VAZ-21043 modification were equipped. The cabin for the new model was borrowed from the base model, with the exception of the rear seat. The folding rear seat allows you to increase the volume of the luggage compartment from 375 to 1340 liters, and then bulky cargo can be transported. The total load of the car has increased to 455 kg. This did not prevent him from being considered the most progressive design until the advent of front-wheel drive VAZs.
Cars of the family are distinguished by angular outlines of the wings, rectangular headlights, and more functional bumpers. In the cabin, a modernized instrument panel, in which a voltmeter appeared. The ventilation system differs from the previous ones by the presence of rectangular deflectors. Heated rear window is standard. The fuse and relay box is located in the engine compartment. The model with an 8-valve 79-horsepower engine with a working volume of 1.5 liters with distributed fuel injection has the VAZ 21102 index. Such an engine provides sufficient power (56 kW) and torque (118 Nm), with moderate fuel consumption. The maximum speed of such a car reaches 170 km / h, and acceleration to "hundreds" takes 14 seconds. Cars with such an engine, due to its high elasticity and traction, are especially good when traveling in heavy urban traffic.
For more active drivers, a 16-valve version with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine was developed based on this engine. with a capacity of 94 hp, with a twin-shaft cylinder head, providing increased performance in terms of power (69 kW) and torque (130 Nm), allowing the car to have improved dynamic qualities. A car equipped with such an engine has the VAZ 21103 index, the maximum speed is already 185 km / h, and acceleration to “hundreds” takes only 12.5 seconds. These modifications on the roads are becoming more and more common, as well as the 2-liter 150-horsepower versions of the VAZ-21106 CTi are quite economical, expressive and expensive. No wonder, because the Opel X20XEV engine with a twin-shaft 16-valve cylinder head and a point injection system allows you to accelerate to 205 km / h. With it, the hundred-kilometer barrier is overcome in just 9.5 seconds. There is also a combat 240-horsepower (!) VAZ-21107 "Rally" 2.0 V16 with a special tubular safety cage built into the body. Its maximum speed is 220 km/h, and the acceleration time to 100 km/h takes only 7 seconds! But they make it piece by piece, only by order of athletes, but it costs - like foreign rally cars: expensive (22 thousand dollars). There are also all-wheel drive versions of the "dozens" of a sports or all-terrain orientation, but they are either experimental or small-scale, and therefore expensive.
Modern interior design (which is still not as neat as foreign counterparts), good aerodynamics, a spacious luggage compartment (480 l) with wide transformation possibilities (a sunroof in the rear seat and a trunk lid that reaches the bumper allow you to carry long loads), a high degree of maintainability - all this is in favor of the VAZ-2110.
The front-wheel drive "tenth" family from Tolyatti, designed from a sheet, is, of course, a new word in the domestic automotive industry. The first copies of the VAZ 2114 were assembled on the factory conveyor in 2000, in 2001 they assembled a pilot batch of 50 cars. Serial production of the car began in April 2003.
The aerodynamics of the VAZ-2114 is similar to the VAZ-2115, in which Cx has slightly decreased, the lifting force has decreased and its distribution along the axes has noticeably improved. The drag coefficient Cx of the updated hatchback decreased only slightly - 0.45 versus 0.46 for the usual "nine". On the other hand, the balance of lifting forces has changed radically: the total lifting force has slightly increased, but it is now evenly distributed along the axes. And this promises a more balanced behavior of the car at high speed.
A 1.5 liter injection engine is installed on the car. (VAZ 2111) with distributed fuel injection, providing an increase in dynamic properties and improved fuel efficiency.
Since 2007, a new 1.6-liter engine (VAZ-11183) of the Euro-3 environmental class has been installed on the car, the model receives the VAZ-21144 index. Distinctive features from the old engine - the catalyst is not under the bottom, but near the engine, a plastic decorative cover is put on the engine, a plastic one is installed instead of an aluminum receiver. VAZ-2115 / Lada Samara - a four-door front-wheel drive sedan developed by the Volga Automobile Plant).
The updated VAZ-2115 sedan was created as part of the Samara-2 project, work on which began in the early 90s. Moreover, thinking primarily about the new appearance of front-wheel drive cars, Togliatti did not forget about aerodynamics. Therefore, in 1993, the VAZ design team arrived at the Dmitrovsky auto training ground - the VAZ people decided to work on the style of the updated cars right in the wind tunnel!
We started by removing standard bumpers from ordinary VAZ-21093 and VAZ-21099 cars, and in their place they fitted new ones that were fashioned from plasticine. The designers noticeably rounded the corners of the plasticine bumpers, and along the lower edge of the side doors they placed developed moldings-thresholds, “flowing” onto the edges of the wings. Using the same technology, a new, slightly longer and sharper “muzzle” was made. Complements the appearance of a small wing on the trunk lid.
After several wind tunnel sessions, during which the shape of all parts was optimized, the designers came up with the final version of the plasticine "armor". And we went back to Tolyatti. And a few months later, the "live" Samara-2, embodied in metal and plastic, was brought to Dmitrov! These were the VAZ-2113 and VAZ-2114 hatchbacks - an alternative to the "eights" and "nines" - and the VAZ-2115 sedan, which was supposed to replace the "ninety-ninth" model. On the whole, Togliatti residents were satisfied with the results of blowing out cars and were already going to prepare Samara-2 for mass production. It was 1994.
Then came the crisis. The main forces and resources at the plant were thrown into finishing work on the "top ten", and the financing of the Samara-2 project was severely curtailed. And as a result, out of three cars, it was decided to bring only the VAZ-2115 to mass production so far. This took almost two years. Only in 1996, the "fifteenth" began to be produced in small batches in the pilot production of VAZ. Since 2001, assembly has also begun on the factory conveyor.
In comparison with its predecessor (VAZ-21099) - VAZ 2115 lengthened by 225 mm. The appearance of the car has noticeably changed - the front and rear parts have been changed, the interior has been updated, while the sidewalls, doors and roof have remained the same. The new model features a front end with original headlights, a reshaped hood and front fenders, new rear lights with an insert between them, body-colored bumpers, a trunk spoiler with an additional brake light, door moldings, sill fairings, a new trunk lid with floor level connector. New efficient lighting equipment is provided.
A number of design solutions were borrowed from the "tenth" VAZ family - an adjustable steering column, upper attachment points for the front seat belts, and a combination of instruments. The back number of the car, as on the "top ten", is located on the bumper.
The car is equipped with 1.5 and 1.6 - liter petrol engines. Initially, modifications with a carburetor engine were produced. But in 2001, a modification came out with an engine with distributed fuel injection. To improve durability and reduce noise on Idling a new clutch disc with an idle damper is provided.
The display unit of the on-board control system carries information about the closing of the door locks, unfastened seat belts, the wear limit of the brake pads, the left ignition key, the level of oil, coolant and washer fluids. The applied new design of the heater provides efficient heating of the passenger compartment.
The following configurations of the VAZ-2115 are provided - "standard" (VAZ-21150-20), "norm" (VAZ-21150-21) and "luxury" (VAZ-21150-22).

VAZ 2121 Niva


VAZ-2121 is a completely original, purely VAZ design, entirely developed by factory engineers. The car was born in those distant years, as they say, in the same breath. In 1972, the first two "crocodiles" quickly proved their right to a worthy place under the sun.
The very next year, the car acquired a metal roof and its own, which soon became famous, name - "Niva". The case progressed so quickly that in January 1974 the car was submitted for state testing. And in the hot sands of Turkmenistan, and in the sky-high heights of the Pamirs (with a height of passes up to 4600 m), the car turned out to be at home.
The compact SUV VAZ-2121 "Niva" with a load-bearing body is rightfully considered the most original and successful development of the domestic automotive industry. In April 1977, the Niva made a real sensation on the world market with a combination of passenger comfort and high cross-country ability, unique for its time, at a more than competitive price (though only outside the USSR). "Niva" had practically no analogues in the practice of the world automotive industry! In 1980, the car "VAZ-2121? awarded the gold medal of the 53rd International Fair in Poznań.
No other Russian passenger car has come close to such success in the international arena. Autoexport received applications from all over the world. There were also two special export versions: VAZ-21211 with a 1.3-liter engine (for countries with expensive fuel and high taxes on engine size) and VAZ-21212 with right-hand drive. The latter, by the way, was in very good demand in England. Export volumes grew rapidly. In the late 1980s - early 1990s. it sometimes exceeded 50% of the output. Over the years of production, out of more than one and a half million cars produced, more than 500 thousand were exported to more than 100 countries.
"Niva" is a cross-country vehicle with a permanent non-switchable all-wheel drive (for off-road vehicles before the "Niva" only the "Range Rover" had this) with an interaxle locking differential and a transfer case with a lowering row. At the same time, the power unit was taken from the mass model of the Zhiguli VAZ-2106, and the transfer case was connected to the gearbox with an intermediate cardan shaft.
Many foreign tuning companies offered successful plastic body kits and other types of fine-tuning for the Niva, for example, by no means superfluous, additional sound insulation. Some even made pickups based on it. By the way, since the 90s, Niva has been one of the favorite objects for Russian tuning shops. By design, the VAZ-2121 was maximally unified with the Zhiguli (in terms of the power unit and many interior elements - with the VAZ-2106 model), but this was not entirely justified, especially with regard to a separate transfer case connected to the standard Zhiguli gearbox by a short cardan shaft. In the absence of mutual balance of these units, the transmission is terribly noisy. This knot became the "Achilles' heel" of the model.
In the 90s, with the end of the shortage of a number of spare parts, the Niva became the most affordable domestic SUV. The plant has the opportunity to create on the basis of the Niva various modifications in demand by the market, as well as to modernize the base model.
So, in 1993, a transitional version of the VAZ-21219 appeared with an old body and a more powerful and high-torque 1.7-liter carburetor engine "21213" equipped with a contactless ignition system. The gearbox was equipped with an overdrive 5th gear (although it was not installed on all cars), the gear ratios of the main pairs were changed from 4.3 to 4.1 and 3.9, which reduced fuel consumption. In addition, between the “razdatka” and the main gearbox, they began to install a shaft with a CV joint from the “Oka”, which somewhat reduced noise and vibration.
As a result of modernization in 1993, a new model "Taiga" was born, which was assigned the index "VAZ-21213". This is a four-seater off-road passenger car with permanent non-switchable all-wheel drive. With their predecessor "Niva" these models look like twin sisters. VAZ-21213 received a modernized body with a third door reaching the bumper (loading something into the luggage compartment has become much easier) and square lights instead of rectangular ones from the "six". The updated interior has a modern instrument panel of the "2108" type, as well as modified front seats. It's hard to believe that there are 16 years between these modifications. During these years, the plant did not make almost any changes to the design of 2121.
Another intermediate version with an old 1.6-liter engine was designated as VAZ-21217, and an export version with a Peugeot 1.9-liter diesel engine was designated 21215. Even such a half-hearted modernization allowed the Niva to successfully survive until the 21st century. But time takes its toll and Niva meets modern passive safety requirements with difficulty, however, the export version was still able to be brought up to EURO III standards for safety and emissions of harmful substances. By the way, landing and disembarking on the fully foldable rear seat is very difficult, and the trunk is frankly too small for a multi-purpose vehicle.
In the 90s, a version 21214-36 was produced for export with an engine equipped with central injection and a catalytic converter. Then the motor was upgraded for distributed injection and began to be delivered to the domestic market (without a converter).
Since 1995, the Togliatti company PSA "Bronto" has been making in small series on the basis of the "Niva" the collection armored car VAZ-212182 "Force" extended by 300 mm along the base and its "civilian" version of the VAZ-212180 "Fora". These models are distinguished by comfort and smoothness of the ride with almost the same cross-country ability and maneuverability. Even longer (by 500 mm) five-door station wagons and pickups based on the Niva are made by OPP VAZ and several small Togliatti firms (see VAZ-2131).
"Niva" is not designed for constant off-road driving, and at the same time it is not very convenient for urban use due to increased consumption fuel, "heavy" steering (without hydraulic booster) and noisy transmission. However, its competitive price, the relative cheapness of spare parts and ease of repair attract attention even to used copies of the Niva.
At one time, the fate of the Niva was in doubt in connection with the organization of the joint venture GM-AVTOVAZ for the production of the Chevrolet Niva. By agreement with the Americans, the production of the old model was to be stopped by 2006, but in connection with the revision of the agreement, AvtoVAZ now has the opportunity to produce Lada Niva (since 2005 it has been officially called Niva). In addition, since 2003, its CKD kits have been supplied to the new assembly plant "AZIA AVTO" in Ust-Kamenogorsk (Kazakhstan), to the Ukrainian "LuAZ" and several assembly plants in South America.
VAZ-2121-21214 (Lada Niva) is one of the most popular SUVs on the domestic market, even new cars have practically no competitors in terms of price + quality + cross-country ability, and moderately used ones (from one to three years) are generally out of competition. All the specific problems of this model are well known to repairmen (although they are not always successfully treated), spare parts are quite cheap and common no less than for the Zhiguli. When buying, you must carefully inspect the body and chassis for intensive use. If the car was often used off-road or as a tractor, it is better to refuse such a purchase. Other things being equal, it is better to choose a car with a less noisy “razdatka”.

VAZ-21211 - A unique modification of the Niva VAZ 2121 with an engine from the VAZ 21011. It began to be produced in 1978.
VAZ-2120 is the basic model of a family of all-wheel drive minivans developed at JSC "AvtoVAZ" using mass-produced components and assemblies. The all-metal load-bearing body, the original roomy interior provide comfortable accommodation for 7 people, and with the rows of seats folded down, a spacious luggage compartment is formed. The presence of 4 doors, one of which with a sliding mechanism, provide convenience both when boarding and disembarking passengers, and when placing enough overall cargo in the cabin. Lada 2120 is convenient for active family holidays, long-distance tourist trips. Also in the family of cars it is planned to have modifications of the type:

VAZ-21212 - Modification of Niva VAZ 2121 with right-hand drive. It was made in very small batches for England to compete with the Rovers there.
VAZ-21213 "Taiga" - differs from the basic modification in a more powerful 1.7-liter engine, which adapts better to load changes, a Solex carburetor, coupled with a contactless ignition system (both reduce fuel consumption), an aluminum radiator, another the shape of the rear lights, a different shape of the tailgate and much more. There were transitional batches with a standard VAZ-2106 1.6 liter engine.

VAZ-212180 "Handicap" - A version of the conveyor "Niva" extended by 300 millimeters. The growth was due to the increased size of doors and, accordingly, doorways. In this regard, "eight" hinges are installed on the doors. The enlarged interior made it possible to install a three-seater rear seat, slightly pushing it forward from the tightness of the wheel arches. Thanks to this, the trunk here is noticeably larger than that of the VAZ 21213. The roof in the rear part of the body is raised due to the plastic “snap”, which allows the rear passengers to feel more at ease. The standard equipment includes an automatic fire extinguishing system installed in the engine compartment. The wheels on this model are initially light-alloy from the Togliatti company "Slik" with tires "Nokia HRC". They are larger than the usual standard ones, so the spare wheel moved to the back door, although it is attached to the rear bumper. This greatly reduced visibility, especially with rear-view mirrors from the classics. As an additional option, a power steering, air conditioning, a plastic bumper bar in front of the radiator grill are offered. The interior is standard, from 21213, but the rear seat is from VAZ 2107. Some of the cars have a French steering column on which you can install a power steering. Such cars are produced by a subsidiary of the VAZ company JSC Manufacture of Special Vehicles BRONTO, which uses the wine code "X7G".
VAZ-212182 "Force" - Issues of booking the "Niva" were worked out on the first such machines with the prefix "B", created from the VAZ 2121. These are no longer produced today. The armored version of the VAZ-21218 is primarily intended for servicing banks and collectors. Armor and special laminated glass are able to protect the driver and passengers of the car from Kalashnikov bullets of 5.45 and 7.62 mm caliber. The thickness of the steel sheet is 4.5 mm, and the special bulletproof glass is 28 mm. The side doors have reinforced hinges, additional locks and loopholes for firing back. The mandatory delivery set includes: automatic fire extinguishing system installed in the engine compartment; explosion and fireproof fuel tank; additional accumulator battery; air conditioner; remote drive of the right door lock from the driver's seat. As additional equipment, an armored floor, light signal beacons, etc. are offered. It is heavier than the VAZ-21218 by 430 kg, respectively, suspension springs from a bar of increased diameter and special shock absorbers.
VAZ-212183 - A beach SUV with a Lando or Landole type body (a body with an opening roof over the rear seat) was created on the basis of the VAZ-21218. The absence of a part of the roof and doors on the car made it necessary to reinforce the body with the original "strapping" of pipes, on which, if necessary, you can pull a light awning or attach brackets for transporting water skis, surfers, boats and other beach utensils. The tailgate leans back on horizontally located loops and opens access to a luggage carrier. The spare tire is "trimmed" at the back on a folding bracket. The seats are covered with leatherette, and on the floor instead of carpets - soft linoleum. A peculiar charm of the car gives the original plastic "body kit" and two-tone color. VAZ-21219 - A transitional modification of the Niva VAZ-2121 with an engine from the VAZ-21213 (1.7 liters). Salon, suspension, rear window washer reservoir remained from the VAZ-2121.
VAZ-2122 "River" - This amphibious vehicle was developed by VAZ engineers in 1989. I used the aggregate base from the VAZ 2121. Only now the engine was 1.3L from the VAZ 21011 and the car could float, although not very well. Vehicle dimensions - 3735x1690x1775, weight - 1.2t. The body was airtight, and for pumping water - there were pumps. Instead of a hard top, there was an awning, as they say, more practical. VAZ-2129 - a model manufactured at the VAZ OPP from the standard 213 model by lengthening the car body due to the insert. Another version of the "long wheelbase" passenger Niva. The main difference from the VAZ-2131 model is the presence of only 3 doors, instead of five. Everything else is almost the same.
VAZ-2129 "Utilter" - a model manufactured at the VAZ OPP. It differs from the VAZ-2129 only in the absence of a rear seat at all, and rear side windows barred from the inside. The car pursues a purely utilitarian goal - to carry a lot of cargo.
VAZ-2130 - it seems like this is a model, an almost complete copy of the VAZ 2129, but with a different interior. According to rumors, she subsequently changed the index to VAZ-2129-01.
VAZ-2131 - Five-door "Niva", the production of which was launched in the Experimental Industrial Production of the STC VAZ in 1995 by lengthening the car body due to the insert. It differs from the conveyor 21213 with a wheelbase increased by 500 millimeters and the same length. These changes made it possible to comfortably accommodate 5 people in the car and a spacious trunk, close in volume to the "tenth". The distance between the seats has been increased by as much as 125 mm. Unfortunately, due to the fact that the car turned out to be heavy, the trailer is contraindicated for it. Installed a new gas tank with a capacity of 70 liters. It is completed with a French steering mechanism of the "screw-ball nut" design with an increased gear ratio, as a result of which the steering wheel for this model is even lighter than that of the VAZ-21213. Due to the lengthening of the body, the minimum turning radius has increased. Later, with the development of the production of 1.8-liter engines in the OPP, a modification of the "five-door" with such an engine appeared. It can be distinguished by the index 21312. Due to the characteristic appearance and the love of manufacturers for the green color, the people got the nickname - the crocodile.
VAZ-2131 SP - The car was created on the basis of a long five-door "Niva" VAZ-2131. It differs from it by a rear overhang increased by 300 millimeters and a high roof. Thanks to the increased trunk, it became possible to install two folding seats in it. As a result, the five-door became a seven-seater.
VAZ-2329 - a model manufactured at the VAZ OPP. This is the first full-fledged pickup truck based on the Niva, and it can accommodate 4 people, though without much comfort. The car has a standard long base (2700 mm) and a rear overhang increased by 300 mm. Its load capacity is 650 kg. It seems that there are no special design tricks and bells and whistles in it, however, integrity, harmony - this is already attractive and beautiful. And not only beautiful - durable, because everything is subject to aging, except for harmony.
Chevrolet Niva has been produced since 2002, but is already considered a landmark achievement of the domestic auto industry.
The "twenty-third" has its own face - the original front part: a purely jeep false radiator grille between teardrop-shaped block headlights, in which, in accordance with the tradition of the brand, the direction indicator is located on top. The back is also far from ordinary, which is worth the rear door glass alone, the lower edge of which is made with a step. To the credit of the designers of AVTOVAZ, the new Niva came out visually unlike any foreign analogue, today its appearance is original and devoid of any obvious imitation, worthy of wry smirks, finger-pointing and replicas “Tore off!”. So the car will by no means get lost among the many of its competitors of different brands, of which at least a dozen have been designed abroad over the twenty years of the life of the previous model of the same name abroad.
With its exterior, the VAZ-2123 differs radically from its predecessor - there is nothing even to look for similarities. Outwardly, this is a typical city SUV - metallic paint, bumpers painted in body color. It was originally made as a five-door version, in the basic version, and its three-door version exists only in sketches and layouts. Another thing is a two-door pickup or van, samples of which have already been built in metal, but there really is no three-door station wagon yet and, quite possibly, will not be at all. However, five doors are not all structural and body innovations. The back door of the new model, in contrast to such a door of the "two hundred and thirteenth" Niva, does not open up, but to the side. In addition, now a “spare tire” is hung on its outer side, which, on its predecessor, rested under the hood cover.
It is quite natural that due to the slightly increased overall dimensions, the VAZ-2123 turned out to be more spacious than the VAZ-21213 inside. A fairly spacious interior can easily accommodate five people, has a rear seat that folds in parts. There are only two seat adjustments, but there are no problems with the selection of a comfortable position. Thanks to the two rows of doors, landing and disembarking have been greatly simplified, the protruding wings of the rear wheels have moved back somewhat and now do not support the second row seat from the sides, which accommodates three people without any problems. Increased by about 1.5 times and the luggage compartment. Of course, it is not as voluminous as that of full-size SUVs, but in comparison with the trunk of the first generation Niva, progress is evident. Well, it’s not worth talking about the general impression of the interior of the cabin: it is made at the modern level (the dashboard even has a place for an airbag for the passenger) and surpasses the interior of the VAZ-21213 in any of its versions.
The chassis and transmission of the old "Niva" almost did not change structurally - modernized units tested by life were used. Here is a list of improvements: the front axle gearbox is "untied" from the engine; the design of the gearbox drive has been changed; elongated intermediate shaft; at the razdatka gears of fine-grained gearing; front and rear driveshafts are unified.
Compared to its predecessors, changes have been made to the layout of the power unit, front and rear suspensions, and steering. The model in the basic configuration is equipped with an electric power steering and an adjustable steering column, an immobilizer and a central lock, power windows for the front doors, a headlight range control and radio preparation. For an additional fee, you can get alloy wheels instead of steel, tinted windows, front fog lights, velor interior with heated front seats, two speakers and an antenna, rear seat head restraints and a spare wheel cover.
In motion, the car is not much different from a simple passenger car. But where roads end and directions begin, Niva feels at ease. Which is not surprising: from a technical point of view, the car is much more serious than commensurate SUVs, which is clearly indicated by the presence of a transfer case and a center differential lock. The reverse side of the car's cross-country ability - elevated level noise generated in the bowels of the transmission when driving at high speeds, as well as significant vibrations on the gearshift lever. True, to disperse the Chevrolet Niva faster than 135 km / h is not an easy task. But it allows you to keep an average of 100-110 kilometers and move comfortably from point A to point B. The Chevrolet Niva's visibility through the front and side windows is quite sufficient, and the thrust of a calm engine is enough to join the stream, having found a gap.
The brake system has been seriously modernized, including the design of the master cylinder and brake booster. The changes affected the clutch and gearbox, in which the bearings, the gearshift mechanism, as well as all gaskets and seals were replaced.
The engine was created on the basis of the well-known "21213", it has hydraulic valve lifters and a hydraulic tensioner for the camshaft drive chain. The camshaft itself with extended phases, which made it possible to increase torque at low revs.
In the basic version, the car is equipped with a 1.7-liter injection engine with a capacity of only 80 hp. with., system of electronic distributed fuel injection and exhaust system with a catalytic converter, which meets the requirements of toxicity standards "Euro-2" and "Euro-3". For a car with a curb weight of 1.35 tons, this power is not enough. And now imagine a Chevrolet Niva with a full load of 1.8 tons. There are 80 liters. With. - nothing at all.
In addition, modifications of the Chevrolet Niva with a GM gasoline engine and a FIAT diesel engine will be developed. It is quite natural, given the prospects for sales in foreign markets, that the model needs several modern engines and, first of all, a diesel engine.
Export version of the Chevrolet Niva (2003) with a more powerful engine from Opel. True, and such a machine costs much more.
Since 2003, the color range has been expanded to seven colors. Now the Chevrolet Niva is equipped with electric exterior mirrors, a cabin air filter and fog lights.

Modifications of the VAZ-2123
