Audi a6 c4 in perfect condition. Used Audi A6 C4: perfect and just good engines and gearboxes. Condition and quality of suspension and chassis

Audi A6 C4 is a direct competitor to the Audi 100 as an ideal used car purchase, since these cars not only belong to the same class, but even look almost like clones. But there is a significant difference between the models, which should be known to anyone who considers the A6 as a candidate for acquisition. By the way, choosing between "weaving" and A6, they often prefer the first option, referring to the fact that it is simpler, so you don't have to suffer with electronics. We will figure out why it is worth buying the A6, what are the advantages of this model over its brother.

Body

In terms of the body, due to the later release, the A6 is more reliable. The anti-corrosion coating is clearly more successful here. Therefore, much smaller areas of the car are captured by rust, the paint looks much fresher. Traditionally, when choosing, you should pay attention to such problem areas: arches, sills, luggage compartment, fenders, doors, including luggage.

You also need to focus on the racks in various compartments of the car, since they are difficult to replace due to the very structure of the body, the complexity of welding. The good news is that due to the really high-quality metal and all the same galvanizing, rust spreads slowly, so if you buy an A6 for a couple of years, then you can not even pay attention to small traces of corrosion, using it only as a reason for bargaining.

A big surprise may be that instead of a monolithic machine, you will have a real designer. In view of the fact that it is not so difficult to weld one body from 2 or even 3 different cars of this brand, it is important to pay attention to all the seams of the car. If you see large non-factory welding marks, then it is quite possible that the A6 suffered a serious accident, after which it was collected from a variety of "donors". You should definitely check the VIN numbers on the body of the car and in the center of the engine board. Fortunately, this placement protects the room well, because there it is practically inaccessible for damage and corrosion. Naturally, the numbers must be the same, otherwise you will face big problems.

It should also be noted that the body structure has been significantly strengthened, the car has become more durable, it is easier to endure physical stress, and the safety of passengers is increased. Also pleased with the revision of the struts and supports, improved vibration and noise absorption. All this makes the car more reliable and more comfortable in comparison with the 100. And if you add to all the advantages of the steel body, which has just phenomenal survivability, then the A6 can be safely called an ideal candidate when choosing a used car. The main thing is that your "candidate" is as good as possible, without the need to buy any body parts or optics. So, it is almost impossible to find original spare parts, they are expensive, and analogues made in China will clearly not please you with quality.

Salon

The salon in the A6 C4 looks quite modern today. All thanks to the thoughtful design and really high-quality cladding materials, which are well preserved with proper care. There is also a well thought-out arrangement of airbags, which is much more perfect than that of its predecessors. Almost all A6s, unlike 100, boast air conditioning, climate control, power windows, and other signs of progress. Of course, due to old age, the systems may not work very correctly, but this will not be a reason for the failure of all options, since almost all of them are independent of each other.

The only problem can be the abundance of gearboxes, which often wear out the sensors, because of which they work incorrectly, and then completely stop functioning. Unfortunately, the location of the gearboxes complicates preventive work, lubrication, so they often have to be changed, which is far from easy due to the lack of parts. Problems with climate control can also be called a traditional problem. They are usually minor, but can still cause discomfort to the owner.

By the way, many of them can be diagnosed independently, without additional equipment, thanks to a well-thought-out control system. As a result, it cannot be said that you can count on perfectly working salon electronics, because the age of the car makes itself felt, but it is quite possible to find a car with minimal problems.

Electronics

The total introduction of electronics into all car systems has become a distinctive feature of the A6, and it clearly benefited the car. It has become much more functional, comfort and safety systems, immobilizers and other miracles have appeared. But, of course, all this required a more complex design and an increase in the amount of wiring, which, at a respectable age, makes itself felt not from the best side.

The main "disease" can be called the electrician responsible for engine control, door wires, and wiring under the hood, but these problems do not cost much. It is worth noting that in terms of electronics, "weaving" is not so problematic, because the wiring on it is much simpler, but the functionality is much more modest. If you love comfort, then this is another reason to choose the A6 C4, and not the 100.

Suspension, braking system and steering unit

In terms of brakes and ABS systems The A6 also wins, given that both models are relatively problem-free in this regard. But due to the fact that the A6 C4 is newer, the wear on this car is less, which gives it greater reliability. Of course, all this is true only with normal maintenance, because if the car was not engaged, then the tubes and hoses will necessarily rot, the calipers will wedge, and there will be no need to talk about any reliability. Problems with the ABS are usually caused precisely by the age of the car, because the wiring often requires re-soldering from specialists or its complete replacement due to contact faults.

Unambiguously strong point the car is a suspension that can pass any test if you take good care of it. Front-wheel drive cars boast the much-vaunted MacPherson strut up front, while the rear has a beam that's never a problem. Stabilizer lateral stability used as front arm, which only adds to the reliability of the system. He may only have problems with silent blocks, but this can only affect comfort, but not the practicality of the suspension.

The steering unit also cannot be called problematic, because everything is simple and reliable here. Problems traditionally can occur only with the rail, which breaks down solely under the influence of time. The same can be said about the power steering, because here the wear concerns leaks in the tubes, as well as corrosion of various parts of the system, which is explained by the extremely long operation. We recommend that you examine the power steering well for leaks, since troubleshooting can be costly.

Transmission

Both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive A6s rarely have any problems with the transmission, since in these cars the system is really reliable. Problematic places can be called CV joints that require additional attention and regular maintenance. Well, in 4x4 cars, in addition to the above, you need to often change the oil in the center differential, and the CV joints are also added to the rear axle. But, if the car was looked after regularly and efficiently, then none of the parts of the system will create significant trouble for you.

Cars on the "mechanics" practically have no weak points, except perhaps the clutch and flywheel of a dual-mass type (although the latter has already been replaced with a standard one on almost all cars). Of course, if the car has a tremendous mileage, then it is advisable to properly service the entire box: disassemble, clean, lubricate, etc. Usually, only cars with powerful cars have questions about the transmission, and if you want to take the A6 C4 with an engine of 2.6 or 2 liters, then you don't have to worry at all, because because of the lower torque, the transmission system practically does not lend itself to negative influences.

But the "automatic machines", which in the 100th model were presented by the ZF 4HP18, which did not cause any complaints, in almost all versions of the A6: were replaced with a system made by Audi itself: 01N. Both boxes are highly reliable, thanks to which cars on "automatic machines" were so popular, their weak point can only be called differentials. But if you buy a car at an age, then this reliability becomes, rather, a minus. The fact is that the ZF 4HP18 and its later brother work normally even when half of the system is out of order or turned into dust.

For 01N, this, to some extent, is not so relevant, since many parts there began to be made of plastic, as a result of which the need for replacement became more frequent. But, nevertheless, if you buy A6 C4 on the "automatic" and the box is still working, then this does not mean that you can relax. It is worth immediately going to the workshop and properly servicing the automatic transmission. Then you can rejoice with peace of mind in the excellent operation of the gearbox, knowing that it is completely serviceable and serviced. Fortunately, repairing both automatic transmissions is not too expensive. In addition, there are quite good analogs. For the ZF 4HP18, it is possible to replace it with a more modern 5HP19FL, and the 01N can easily be replaced by an automatic transmission from Volkswagen, which is still common.

Engines

Almost all A6 engines inherited from the "hundred", but clearly preserved better due to greater freshness. Weak point motors can be called hoses, which, if not replaced in time, lead to serious damage to the motors. The hardware itself is excellent here, so the engines are often quite well preserved even today.

So, eight-valve two-liter motors are quite good and reliable, they rarely require significant repair work upon purchase. The 2.3-liter five-cylinder engine is much more problematic, and very outdated, so you may have problems even with repairs. The best option can be called V6 engines with a volume of 2.6 and 2.8 liters. With them, you only have to think about replacing the timing belt, everything else is quite reliable and modern. In addition, these motors do not require high fuel consumption at all, which is also a huge advantage.

New for the A6 C4 are 2 petrol engines: V6 1.8 and 2.6 liters. They remained relevant for Volkswagen and Audi cars for a long time, so there will definitely be no problems with their maintenance. The disadvantage of such motors can be called a fairly quick oiling, so they need good care, but they will delight you with excellent speed and good dynamics. Also not left without updating diesel motors, after all, 1.9 and 2.5 liter engines appeared. They have a tremendous resource, but problems with repair work may arise due to the low popularity of diesel engines in Russia.

Output

As a result, we can say that the Audi A6 C4 is an excellent car that you can safely buy used. At the same time, it retained the dignity of the "weave", "refreshed" them and supplemented them with more modern solutions. But you need to be very careful when choosing a machine, since a high resource can hide big problems from you in various systems. Study the car thoroughly before buying, and then you can get a really good used car!

In 1982, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the C3 model was presented to the automotive community, the body of which had an extremely low aerodynamic coefficient Cx = 0.30 for that time. This solution ultimately resulted in significant fuel savings. Another innovation was the use of flush windows (recessed windows), which also influenced the parameters of aerodynamic drag. In 1990, this model received an innovative direct injection diesel power unit. With a performance of 120 hp this engine showed reduced fuel consumption.

Since 1984, the model has been equipped with the Quattro all-wheel drive system. In September 1985, the first modifications of the C3 with a fully galvanized body appeared. In the late 1980s, a version of the Audi V8 was introduced to the market. The basis for it was the modification of the Audi 200 Quattro (with an automatic 4-band gearbox, rear and center Torsen differential).

years of production from 1977 to 1983

The production of the C2 model was launched in 1976. It is characterized by the presence of an increased wheelbase, more refined than the C1 model, interior design and a 5-cylinder engine. As part of this generation, a station wagon version of the Avant was released in 1977. During the 1980 restyling, the exterior of the car was updated (the shape of the rear lights was changed), the capacity of the luggage compartment was increased to 470 liters, the interior was improved, 4-cylinder engines of different volumes and performance were introduced into the engine range. In 1981, the line was expanded with a CS version with a front spoiler and light-alloy wheels.

Audi 100 and 200 C1 Not produced

years of production from 1968 to 1976

The production of the Audi 100 C1 sedan, which the company began on November 1, 1968, became the basis of the model's modern success. The Audi 200 variant was the same modification of the Audi 100, but in a more expensive version (it had an improved finish and a richer basic equipment).
Since 1970, C1 cars have also been produced as a coupe. This version has been the largest vehicle of the Audi automobile company since its inception. In 1973, the car was restyled: the radiator grille became more compact, steel springs appeared instead of the rear torsion bar, and the shape of the rear optics changed. As a result, the car looks more modern and stylish. This model was equipped with a 4-cylinder power unit working in conjunction with rear wheel drive and mechanical transmission.

If you do not go into details, then we can assume that the Audi A6 C4 is an updated version of the popular Audi 100 model, but looking more closely, numerous differences become immediately visible. What to choose and why the choice may fall on a more complex version of the car, we will figure it out in this material.

Formally, the Audi A6 C4 model was produced for only 3 years and became a transitional moment in the further development of cars from the German brand. Unlike its progenitor, the “hundredth” series, the car had a great price, but it was also equipped with a large set of additional options. If a hundred square meters of the beginning of the 90s could be bought in an "empty" configuration, which did not even have front power windows, then the updated generation was already in basic configuration equipped with an electrical package with a climate system, which favorably distinguishes it from its predecessors.

Many quite consciously, when choosing between the Audi 100 and A6, choose the first one, because it is a little simpler in terms of electronics. What is most surprising is the wide range of powertrains that have been installed on cars. Apparently, the company assumed a long life of the model on the assembly line, but modern trends forced to update the car again in a short time. Therefore, in the secondary market, you can find specimens equipped with diesel units with a working volume of 1.9 and 2.5 liters, which could develop up to 90 horsepower in the first version (which is very small for a heavy car) and 115 or 140 horsepower (a larger engine offered in two versions). If you do not go into details, then you can deservedly call diesel units - motors of the million.

The variety of gasoline engines is greater, and they are all noteworthy. The number of units for the monitored model included two-liter engines with a capacity of 115 horsepower (there were versions with a capacity of 100 horsepower), a 1.8-liter engine with 20 valves, capable of developing up to 125 horses. The car was also equipped with three modifications of the V6 gasoline engine, which had a volume of 2.6 and 2.8 liters, developing 150 and 174 or 193 horsepower, depending on the modification.

In addition, for lovers of a large number of horses, the company produced car models with the S6 index, which were equipped with powerful V8 engines with a displacement of 4.2 liters, and the developed power reached up to 280 horsepower, and in the S6 plus version - up to 326 horses. But the latest variant of the car is a rare specimen in the aftermarket.

Condition and quality of the body on the Audi A6 C4

Surprisingly, the car received a very high-quality body, the steel of which resists corrosion for a long time. At the same time, in our time, the car is already at least 20 years old, but there are instances with a good body condition that have not undergone major repairs. For the sake of justice, you can also find rotten specimens, the restoration of which can cost a lump sum.

Anti-corrosion resistance is the main strong point of the model, because the body is fully galvanized. In comparison with its predecessor, the car wins qualitatively in the condition of the body, not only because of the quality of steel and galvanized, but also because of the quality of the paintwork. But given its age, the car still needs to be checked with special attention. As always, the main foci of rust are the front arches, door edges and boot lid edges, as well as places hidden by moldings and plastic linings.

When choosing a car, there are several factors to consider that will influence your choice. The fact is, if the purchase is intended for temporary use, then you should not worry about several foci of corrosion that spread very slowly, but if you buy a car for a long time, then you should look for a car in better condition. Rebuilding damaged parts or replacing them can be a real challenge. There are not many original body parts on the market, and their search can take a lot of time, because there are many body parts fit on the Audi 100, which has a less sturdy body. Therefore all body elements are snapped up very quickly, and cheap Chinese counterparts are of frankly low quality.

Interior quality and condition

Surprisingly, the interior design still looks relevant and solid. At the same time, the quality of the materials used to decorate the interior space is of high quality. Therefore, most of the specimens can boast of a fairly fresh look, subject to careful handling by the previous owner. In addition, the Audi A6 C4 did not have frankly "empty" trim levels. The presence of electric windows, electric adjustment of side mirrors, electric adjustment of seats and the climate system are commonplace.

There are no complaints about the quality of plastic parts and finishing materials - even on cars of the first years of production, they look soundly. But the main innovation in the design of the car of those times was a great attention to the safety of the driver and front passenger. The configuration includes driver and passenger airbags, as well as a seat belt pretensioner system.

But given the age, it should not be surprising that some electronic components and buttons may not work or "glitch", but in most cases, repairs will take little time and cost a modest amount.

The main problem on a used car will be climate control, which often fails for various reasons. Most often, the fan and the motor-reducer of the damper drives break down, in which the damper position sensors can break. In addition, due to the age of all elements, the climate control unit itself may fail. In most cases, the soldering is broken in it or breaks are formed in the tracks on the board. Sometimes it is possible to restore the board in the workshops, but it may be necessary to complete replacement electronic unit.

Thanks to the wide range of adjustments in the driver's seat, people of various heights and builds will be able to sit well behind the wheel. All chairs are comfortable. What is most surprising is the built-in system for diagnostics and monitoring the performance of various vehicle systems. At the same time, to call this system an on-board computer does not turn the tongue. Rather, this system is similar to a scanner for the OBD II protocol, with the help of such self-diagnostics, you can easily identify non-working elements of a particular system, view the errors that appear and data from numerous sensors.

To be fair, finding a copy with fully functional electronics in the cabin is a hopeless affair. Most breakdowns are easily repaired, but before buying, you should pay close attention to the performance of the climate control, dashboard, airbags and the steering column switch block. Any malfunction can be a reason for a discount.

Electrical quality and condition

Again, given the car's twenties, surprises can be expected from the wiring and electronics. Moreover, all the problems are aggravated by handicraft repairs, which many owners of old cars resort to, but several main centers of problems can be noted. First of all, the wiring under the hood suffers, where it is exposed to constant temperature changes. The second place is the wiring in the doors.

The youngest A6 is fifteen years old and electrical failures are not uncommon. There are also problems with electronic engine control units, immobilizers and climate control unit. Especially, cars with a rotten body, or a constantly wet interior, suffer from this. In addition, the normal wear and tear of the generator, various relays and other electrical consumers should be taken into account.

Condition and quality of suspension and chassis

The Audi A6 C4 is a representative of how the quality of modern cars was really supposed to develop. The fact is that all the innovations only benefited the comfort in the car, but also extended its service life. What cannot be said about modern cars, which, for the sake of dubious environmental standards, as well as even greater earnings of auto concerns and dealers, can only serve the warranty period without expensive and serious repairs.

It is noteworthy that the car's suspension is made according to a simple scheme, the rear part of the hovercraft consists of a beam, which does not imply any adjustments and frequent repairs, and the front suspension is made according to the MacPherson levers scheme with an anti-roll bar. At its core, the suspension is very reliable and maintainable, so there will be no special problems with it. The only thing to expect is age or resource problems in many elements at once, which can entail high costs. But the restored hodovka will please with inexpensive and rare maintenance (except for the stabilizer struts, which begin to make noise after 20,000 - 30,000 km).

Energy intensive chassis not only smooths out the unevenness of our roads, but also provides the car with confident movement at high speeds. The same applies to the braking system along with the ABS, which are quite reliable and resource-intensive, but age could affect the brake hoses and pipes. In addition, irresponsible owners who did not service the car could bring the calipers to complete seizure. Therefore, before buying, you should conduct a complete inspection of the entire brake system, and check the performance of the ABS electronic unit.

Steering also reliable, but everything depends on the age of 20 and the development of the resource of many elements of the car. Therefore, a constantly leaking hydraulic power steering system, burst high-pressure hoses or a knock on the steering rack are a common situation on the copies presented for sale.

Transmission quality and condition

I would like to say that the Audi A6 C4 has an ultra-reliable transmission, but today's age makes it impossible to find an absolutely complete transmission on this model. But still, the transmission resource is very long.

The car was completed mechanical box gears with dual-mass flywheel and two versions automatic boxes gears in four steps. At the same time, for the front-wheel drive modifications, a transmission developed by Volkswagen, with serial designation 01N, was used, and for cars with the proprietary quattro all-wheel drive system, a transmission from ZF - 4HP18 was used.

Audi's “hobbyhorse” is the quattro all-wheel drive versions, which were also introduced in the 100 / A6 family. Note that they are encountered quite often in our country. It should be admitted that the manual transmission has traditionally turned out to be reliable, and can work for many more years. But you will have to replace the dual-mass flywheel, if it has not yet been changed, and carry out maintenance with changing the oil, oil seals and checking the synchronizers and bearings. On this, it will be possible to forget about the mechanics for another several hundred thousand kilometers, only you will have to change the clutch, which can last up to 200,000 km with a calm driving style.

Automatic transmissions are just as reliable when compared to other vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. Naturally, not a single automatic machine can compete with a manual transmission in terms of maintenance cost, the main principle of mechanics plays here - the simpler the unit, the more reliable it is.

Separately, it should be noted that the automatic transmission from ZF, purchased for the Audi A6 C4, has already passed many years of running-in and received a number of upgrades. Therefore, it can serve as a kind of reference model for reliability for all automatic transmissions. This is also confirmed by the fact that these transmissions were installed on all-wheel drive versions of the car with a greater load.

A 5-speed manual transmission was standard for all cars, but a 4-speed automatic was installed only on request. But, as with all cars that are over 20 years old, you have to take into account the factor of age and errors when servicing the car by other owners. And in the case of the ZF 4HP18, this factor comes to the fore. The fact is that this unit forgave the owners for many mistakes, and even a small oil level in the system did not cause a quick breakdown, but became the reason for the rapid wear of all mechanisms. And at the moment it is difficult to find a car that would not require automatic transmission repair.

But proper maintenance and careful operation allowed the box to be used for 400,000 km of run until the first maintenance work with the replacement of oil seals, rubber bands, some clutches and linings of the gas turbine engine.

The box itself is relatively easy to maintain and repair. Therefore, having purchased a used A6 C4, it is advisable to contact the masters for repair and subsequent quiet operation of the car.

With proper operation, including changing the oil every 70 thousand km in the "mechanics" and "automatic" (together with the filter and the oil pan gasket), the gearbox can last long enough without serious problems. Things are a little simpler with the automatic, which was equipped with the front-wheel drive modification. It was specially designed as a low-cost and simple unit that can be repaired in simple conditions and without highly professional equipment. Moreover, this unit does not allow operation without regular maintenance.

Approximately, on a run of 200,000 km, you have to do deep prophylaxis, in which it is necessary to replace the linings of the gas turbine engine, clean the valve body, check the oil pump and change all rubber seals and gaskets.

In addition to the gearboxes themselves, you will have to monitor the state of the proprietary quattro all-wheel drive system with a Torseon limited-slip differential. But we must admit that this system went through all the necessary running-in back in the early 80s, and reached our model in a fully operational state. Despite its excellent reliability, the 4WD version is slightly more expensive to maintain, mainly due to the more complex multi-link rear suspension design.

Quality and condition of power units

The condition of the engines largely depends on how the car was serviced before you. Due to age, many rubber and plastic elements of the cooling system need to be replaced. And by today, most of the rubber bands and plastic parts are crumbling and bursting. The motors themselves have, for the most part, age-related problems that are quite solvable. Moreover, competent maintenance allows gasoline units to travel up to 400,000 km without major repairs.

For our operating regimes, engines of 2.0 liters can be called optimal, of which there were two in the power range of the Audi 100, with a capacity of 101 and 115 hp. Two-liter motors are simple in design and reliable. The only negative is the Digifant fuel injection system on engines of the later ABK series. This system is more complex in design, and practically does not give advantages in terms of power, especially considering that the cost of new elements is much higher. There is nothing more to say about two-liter engines, they are no different from similar in-line engines with four cylinders and eight valves.

In principle, the 2.3-liter five-cylinder engines do not differ from previous units in terms of reliability, but another complex injection system with proprietary modifications and some innovations of that time is already being used. The problem itself is that a long service life makes the entire injection system unusable, and there are no repairmen for outdated and complex equipment. Therefore, most cars with this engine are equipped with LPG, which is intended not to save money, but to replace the standard fuel system.

In addition, motors often have problems with electronic control units and numerous sensors, the cost of which is beyond reasonable limits. Therefore, our "kulibins" got the hang of installing control systems from domestic cars, which, by the way, has a positive effect on the operation of engines.

In general, the injection system is a sore spot for used Audi. Injectors, oxygen sensors, valves idle move- a standard list of candidates for replacement. But best of all, when choosing an Audi A6 C4, focus on cars equipped with power units V6. These motors turned out to be more reliable and less whimsical to maintain than other options, and high power allows you to feel worthy in the city and on intercity roads. The only thing you have to pay attention to is the pump, which has received an unsuccessful design and can fail at any time, and it will also be necessary to change the timing belt every 60,000 km.

The low-volume 1.8-liter engine also showed itself well, with a piston group resource of up to 500,000 km, and the engine power allows it to compete with the 2.6-liter V6 engine. At the same time, the unit is distinguished by more modern control electronics, and, accordingly, a more rational use of the engine's capabilities. But it should be borne in mind that this unit is more sensitive to quality engine oil and his pressure. Therefore, you will have to constantly monitor oil consumption and the frequency of oil changes every 10,000 km. When replacing the timing drive, you should carefully consider the condition of the chain and tensioner. At the same time, the cost of the tensioner is high, but you have to pay for the original spare part. Cheaper analogs leave no more than 30,000 - 50,000 km, and the original quietly nurses up to 200,000 km.

The best diesels are 1.9 TDI. But buyers are more likely to prefer the 2.5 TDI version. Despite the "tricky" direct injection system, this engine lasts long enough. But there is nothing special to say about diesel engines, diesel engines turned out to be very successful and can easily survive to our times without the need for major repairs. But as some owners note, a 1.9-liter 90 horsepower engine cannot provide a heavy car with the necessary dynamics.

The Audi 100 series began to be assembled back in the late 60s. Later, the Germans abandoned this name in favor of the more well-known A6 nomenclature today. The latest generation of "weaving" debuted on the market in 1991. At the same time, a sports version of the model appeared, designated by the S4 index, under the hood of which were installed gasoline engines- 2.2-liter R5 or 4.2-liter V8.

In 1994, the Audi 100 C4 was redesigned. The car received slightly modified headlights, taillights, new mirrors and bumpers. The interior was also slightly refreshed. Along with the restyling, a new designation was introduced: the name “100” was replaced by the A6, and the sports modification received the S6 index instead of the S4. Production of the Audi A6 C4 ended in 1997, when the more modern, more technological and more attractive Audi A6 C5 was released.

Engines

Gasoline:

R4 1.8 (125 hp);

R4 2.0 (101, 115-140 HP);

2.2 R5 Turbo (230 hp) S4 and S6 versions;

2.3 R5 (133 hp);

2.6 V6 (150 HP);

2.8 V6 (174-193 HP);

4.2 V8 (280-290 hp) S4 and S6 versions;

4.2 V8 (326 hp) version of the S6 Plus.

Diesel:

R4 1.9 TDI (90 hp);

R4 2.4 D (82 hp);

R5 2.5 TDI (115-140 hp).

Two decades ago, Audi made sure that the choice of engines for the A6 was as wide as possible. As a result, many people, deciding to buy, cannot decide which of the motors suits them best. Never mind the 4-cylinder engines, with the exception of the 140-horsepower version of the 2-liter unit. They are very weak and therefore have to consume too much fuel.

Motors with a working volume of 2.0 l / 140 hp are considered the most optimal. and 2.3 L R5. The V6 and V8 are an option for true Audi 100 aficionados who don't care about either high fuel consumption or high maintenance costs.

Regardless of which engine you choose, you will have to come to terms with possible malfunctions... After all, the car is already very many years old.

What is failing? Most often, ignition coils and a flow meter. Timing belts are also inconsistent, which do not withstand the period allotted by the manufacturer. The optimal replacement interval is 60,000 km. You should also pay attention to the valve cover - oil leaks often occur from under it.

In addition to gasoline engines, the Audi 100 also received diesel units. Compared to modern diesels, they can be considered "eternal". The 2.4-liter unit creates the least problems, slightly worse than the 2.5 and 1.9 TDI. If you need the most dynamic option, then you can safely choose the top-end 140-horsepower 2.5 TDI (not to be confused with the unreliable 2.5 TDI V6 engine of the later generation). Such big car the 2.5 TDI is best suited. The rest simply do not have enough strength. Malfunctions are most often associated with old age and relate to: the injection system (pump and injectors), the turbocharger, as well as the flow meter.

Technical features

Depending on the type of drive, the Audi 100 can be front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Transmissions: 5 or 6-speed mechanics, as well as 4 or 5-speed "automatic". The suspension is a classic design with a MacPherson strut at the front and a torsion beam at the back. In all-wheel drive versions, a multi-link scheme works on the rear axle.

Malfunctions

Reliability and high quality have always been the strong points of the Audi 100 / A6, for which motorists love this model. Despite its age, the A6 C4 holds up quite well, but it is not without its drawbacks. Often the steering gear fails. With age, gaps appear, and the rail begins to knock. The power steering pump is also rented.

The starter and generator do not differ in endurance. But competitors are no better in this regard. A thorough check of the condition of the cooling system is necessary. In the event of its failure, the cost of repairing the engine is inevitable. In versions with Quattro all-wheel drive, the higher costs for rear suspension repairs should be considered.

Often, such elements as an air conditioning compressor, an electric window regulator, a sunroof opening mechanism, a thermostat, various relays, a temperature sensor and a parking brake mechanism are naughty.

Conclusion

The Audi 100 / A6 C4 is an almost perfect German car that, despite the years, not only looks good, but is also quite reliable. A big plus is the availability of inexpensive spare parts and the rich equipment of young specimens. The wide range of engines and suspension settings deserves special praise. But there are also disadvantages. V6 and V8 engines require astronomical fuel costs. Unfortunately, finding a copy in decent condition is not an easy task.
